Geekery: Rian Johnson is Returning to Star Wars
The Last Jedi director is developing a new Star Wars trilogy.
Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that Johnson will be developing a new series with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman. No time period within the universe has been mentions, but it will be developed after Episode IX comes out in 2019. The new trilogy will not be part of the Skywalker family saga, and will not focus on characters from the current 9 movies. That last bit is music to my ears. Let’s move forward, shall we?
Kathleen Kennedy had nothing but great things to say in the official statement…
We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.
Johnson is… well…
Obviously I hope you like The Last Jedi. But man now I REALLY hope you like The Last Jedi.

It looks like they’re letting him start the project from a unknown point, somewhere new. There are some big possibilities here: exploring the stories of The Old Republic, going to the unexplored parts of the galaxy, or looking into the far future.
What do you want to see this new trilogy go?
