Play As Charlton Heston’s Psyche Like You’ve Always Wanted
Get your stinkin’ paws ON this game you darn dirty human!
Planet of the Apes is a cooperative game set in the original Planet of the Apes movie. As the film has only 1 main human character and this is a cooperative game, naturally each player takes the role as one of the pieces of Colonel George Taylor’s psyche. The pieces of his psyche, Cynical, Commander, Defiant, Clever, each having different skills which will assist Taylor throughout his journey. In the game, players go through the most iconic scenes of the film, from major event to minor event. All players are involved in each attempt to complete the scene by passing cards and using skills. If the apes complete the scene for the players do, they will have to face the consequences of failure. Additionally, the Statue of Liberty token moves ever closer to ending the game. If that happens before the players are able to complete each scene, they have lost the game.
The theme of each player acting as part of a character’s psyche is certainly a new concept. What I like most about it thematically, is it becomes less about the player attempting to get themselves through the game, but instead are guiding someone else and making choices for them. It might seem like a minor thematic change, but I think players who get into the story of games will really feel the difference. All players are working together to get a separate main character through the story. Planet of the Apes was designed by Richard Launius, the creator of Arkham Horror as well as many other story driven games. Fans of his work are likely to really feel his design touch on the game.
