Tabletop Spotlight: Chaos Daemon Codex & Cards
Codex Chaos Daemons is out and about – time to take a deep dive in the wacky world of the warp!
The Chaos Daemons have been terrorizing the BoLS Twitch Channel all last week – but their codex is finally out and in stores. Our friends at Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy brought over a copy as well as the data cards and we take a quick tour:
As far as the Codex goes – it’s everything you’ve come to know and expect from a GW codex. It’s got all the lore, rules, traits, stratagems, etc. that codexes come with. We do go over those in more detail in the video but we’ve also been covering the book in smaller chunks all last week. We won’t rehash all that here – however, we do want to mention that overall this is a pretty solid addition to the game.
The Codex does justice to 3 out of the 4 chaos gods. Khorne, Tzeentch, and Nurgle all have a ton of units and options in the book – no complaints there. Slaanesh however, did get the short end of the stick when it comes to the “fine details” especially for the models. Yeah, everything that is currently out is there – but everyone else got fancy names and titles for their units. Slaanesh still got the same amount of “rules” that everyone else did at least. Infact, Slaanesh has some of the meanest, fastest options in the book. You won’t out run those Seekers and they are probably going to get a turn 1 charge off!
The Data Cards, I think, are going to be really useful for new players. Having all your powers and stratagems in a quick reference deck is pretty darn handy. Now, you could just type up all your options and print them out, too – but for $15, that’s not a bad deal to save you some time. And I personally find it useful to put the active powers next to the unit that has them. But hey – YMMV.
Overall, Codex Daemons is out and it’s going to shake-up the meta. They bring a ton of utility to the table for Chaos players that it’s going to be hard NOT to want to splice some into your list. In fact, I think that might be the biggest weakness of this codex. I don’t think folks are going to want to run a mono-god list (maybe Tzeentch)…but they are going to want to add them into there existing CSM army for the nasty combos you can pull. At least until GW decides to either come out and say “yes, this is correct” or “oops, let’s tweak that.” Because Deepstriking a Lord of War is kinda dumb. Funny…but dumb.
