D&D: Githyanki and Githzerai in Mordenkainen’s Tome Of Foes
A rrakkma is a hunting party of gith, dedicated to hunting down and eradicating mind flayers when they rear their be-tentacled heads–it’s also the name of the special preview adventure tied to Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes. Come and get a glimpse of the rules for both flavors of Gith.
That’s right friends! Got another preview of Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes. This time we’ve got an overview of Rrakkma, AND because Gith is one of my favorite races, whether you tack on a -zerai or -yanki, we’ve got a glimpse at their rules. First up though, an overview with Chris Lindsay, Adventurer’s League Ringmaster, Product Manager, and author of the adventure itself:
I like this concept. It’s a self-contained adventure that has a good reason to bring together an exciting mix of characters–the decadent, and sometimes brutal warriors of the Githyanki blend with the mental masters and martial arts of the Githzerai–all for a plane-hopping purpose.
Right away you have it all, exotic locations, a highlight of the central conflict, and as we’ve seen–a mix of interesting monsters and aberrant horrors that combo well together. And it’s a ninth level adventure, so your characters will get to flex their muscles and use powers that you might not get to otherwise.
The Gith are themselves quite interesting as well. Let’s take a look at what they are capable of:
Githyanki
Decadent Mastery.
- You learn one language of your choice, and you are proficient with one skill or tool of your choice. In the timeless city of Tu’narath, githyanki have abundant time to master odd bits of knowledge.
Martial Prodigy.
- You are proficient with light and medium armor and with shortswords, longswords, and greatswords.
Githyanki Psionics.
- You know the mage hand cantrip, and the hand is invisible when you cast the cantrip with this trait.
- When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the jump spell once with this trait, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest.
- When you reach 5th level, you can cast the misty step spell once with this trait, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest.
- Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
Githyanki are highly mobile warriors who get a boost to their combat abilities. If you want to be a gish, well, these are the originators of the term.
Githzerai
Mental Discipline.
- You have the advantage on saving throws against the charmed and frightened conditions. Under the tutelage of monastic masters, githzerai learn to govern their own minds.
Githzerai Psionics.
- You know the mage hand cantrip, and the hand is invisible when you cast the cantrip with this trait.
- When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the shield spell once with this trait, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest.
- When you reach 5th level, you can cast the detect thoughts spell once with this trait, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest.
- Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
