Geekery: Amazon’s $1 Billion LoTR Series Reportedly Tells a King’s Origin Story
The crowd has thrown out many theories, ideas, and requests since Amazon announced its billion-dollar series base in the LoTR universe. One site is now claiming they know what it’s going to be.
TheOneRing.net (who tend to be right about Tolkien related rumors) is reporting that the high budget series will be focusing on King Elessar Telcontar, holder of the Sceptre of Annúminas, ruler of Gondor and Arnor… aka Aragorn.
[BREAKING] We have confirmed from multiple sources that @AmazonStudios new billion-dollar #LOTR series will open its first season centered on a young Aragorn.
Let’s discuss whats available and how this opens up Tolkien’s Legendarium. A thread. #Tolkien

They have to produce five seasons – if this tweet is accurate, there’s a lot they can dig into. The death of Aragorn’s father, how he ended up being hidden and fostered in Rivendell, his blossoming love for Arwen. His time with the Dúnedain, and service to King Thengel of Rohan and Steward Ecthelion II of Gondor.
His history before Frodo Baggins entered his life is exciting and could make for a good series. Casting is going to be important here. Viggo Mortensen brought the character to audiences the first time, and he was outstanding in the role. They’ll have to find someone that can match his intensity and earnestness. Viggo needs his own Sean Patrick Flanery.
I’m looking forward to more developments with this project. It’s a massive, expensive undertaking. Getting the right team together – from showrunner and main cast to music and costumes and set dressing – is going to be crucial for its success. This isn’t something you can go halfway on.
