Geekery: The Expanse, Gotham & More Get the Axe
It’s that time of year when networks trim their budgets of fat and bring in more ad dollars with new shows. This year saw some shocking upsets for fans.
The following are either cancelled or will wrap up in their next season…
- 12 Monkeys (Syfy) – after Season 4
- Adventure Time (Cartoon Network) – after Season 9
- Ash vs. Evil Dead (Starz)
- Blood Drive (Syfy)
- The Crossing (ABC)
- The Exorcist (Fox)
- The Expanse (Syfy) – after Season 3
- Gotham (Fox) – after Season 5
- Inhumans (ABC)
- Jean-Claude Van Johnson (Amazon)
- The Last Man on Earth (Fox) – after Season 4
- The Librarians (TNT)
- Lucifer (FOX)
- The Originals (CW) – after Season 5
- The Strain (FX)- after Season 4
- Wayward Pines (Fox) – after Season 2
I think the most painful of that list has to be The Expanse. It’s critically acclaimed, and it has a very loyal fanbase. The writers behind the show have taken to Twitter, asking companies to pick up the series so they can wrap the story up properly. Given Netflix’s habit of picking up series – and their love of sci-fi – they’d be an ideal candidate. Amazon is looking for series to foster, as well. Hopefully it’ll land somewhere.
Not all is lost. A lot of shows were renewed – including ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and all of CW’s DC shows. We’re also getting at least one more season of American Gods and a lot of new Rick and Morty episodes. AMC renewed both Walking Dead shows, and Preacher.
The one I’m slightly worried about is Legion. It was renewed through season 2, no word on a season 3. Maybe they’ll wrap it, but nearly half way in to the season it doesn’t feel like it will. I’d hate to have the show dead end.
