Geekery: ‘ThunderCats Roar’ Gives the Classic Cartoon a New Look

Over 30 years have passed since Lion-O first appeared on our TVs and gathered the ThunderCats with his trademark cry. According to Warner Brothers that also makes the series the right age for a reboot.
This is really… different.
The style is a little Stephen Universe, a little Adventure Time – which works for those series really well. It’s a huge departure from the work the Pacific Animation Corporation did in the 1980s. The 2011 reboot changed up the look, but its animation had substance to it – that series was canceled. This latest version is really fast and loose.
If they’re aiming to get the nostalgia crowd they’ve totally flopped – no one asked for this. I think younger kids will totally go for it – it’s in the style of current day cartoons that they love, and they’re into zany hijinks which this seems to have plenty of. It’s a hard pass from me, but I don’t think it’s the end of the world that they’re trying something different.
In other 1980s cartoon reboot news, Netflix released the first look at their She-Ra series. It’s not enough to make any sort of real judgment off of. I like the limited view we’re getting, though. Eisner Award-winning author Noelle Stevenson is the lead on the project. It’s due out later this year.
