Look Out, Sir! A New Rule For AoS Is Incoming
Here’s a look at the new Look Out, Sir! It’s an unexpected spin on a classic favorite–the rule definitely keeps your characters safe, but not necessarily in the way you’re thinking.
Like the rest of the Mortal Realms, even the rules for Age of Sigmar are dotted with the fractious remains of the world-that-was and Warhammer Fantasy–though what was familiar is now seen in a whole new light. For my money it’s a much cleaner take on what Fantasy had going for it–I like this Look Out, Sir rule much better than any other iteration I’ve seen.
I think even 40K’s bodyguard rules could benefit from it–you’d have much less of the shenanigans that can bog down a game now with it. But, here, see for yourself:

It’s that simple. Just a -1 to hit for ranged weapons if you have a Hero with at least a 4-man unit standing nearby. No passing off hits or wounds or whatever–just a straight -1 to your ranged attack rolls. Streamlined but still worth having. A -1 is nothing to sneeze at, and it keeps your heroes from getting “sniped” by an Arkanaut Frigate’s main gun.
This adds all sorts of interesting tactical dilemmas to the game – from ensuring your Heroes are always covered by a supporting unit to choosing targets – do you make a less efficient shooting attack at a Hero or do you try to take out his retinue first? In melee, meanwhile, you’ll want to try to use your forces to surround enemies and drive a wedge between them and their support. Combined with the new command abilities, we think that the new edition is going to be very interesting for Heroes indeed…

It’s true. There will be a lot of play for Heroes in the new edition–which could be interesting, but hopefully not to the detriment of the units out there–but so far what we’re seeing does seem to emphasize them, rather than making the units a “hero delivery system” like we’ve seen in other games.
What do you think of the new rule? Would you want to see a change like that come to 40K?
