Community: The Best Tabletop Game of 2018 for NOOBs
2018 is shaping up to be a BIG year with amazing tabletop games all over the place – but which is the BEST for newcomers? That’s a tough one.
As we approach a summer that has promised us Age of Sigmar 2.0 and excitment building for X-Wing V2, we want to have a chance to have the community weigh in on series of fun open questions and see what we all think.
So put on your thinking hat, grab your favorite beverage and enjoy a gamer conversation with your friends.
Today’s topic is:
“What is the best tabletop game for new players NOW*?”
The Variables
Todays questions is both simple and complex. I want you to take all the pros and cons including:
- Rules complexity
- Model count
- Initial cost
- Time from purchase to playing
- Size of community / ease of finding games
- Depth of play
- Hobby requirements
- Community enthusiasm
- Game longevity
- Manufacturer support
- Regularity of new content
- Familiarity of brand
… and a hundred other factors and pick the one game just perfect to introduce the entire wargaming hobby to new players with zero gaming experience. Which one is it – AND WHY?
The Contestants
For today’s question we will focus only on “grand wargames” with miniatures, open movement and army construction rules. We’ll do the smaller boardgame-skirmish games later. Here’s just a handful to get you started.
- Warhammer 40,000
- Age of Sigmar*
- X-Wing*
- Infinity-Hordes
- Star Wars LEGION
- Star Wars ARMADA
- Infinity
- Flames of War
- Team Yankee
- Bolt Action
- Warpath
- Kings of War
The industry has never been so competitive, and I have 2-3 finalists in my head already but it would be cheating to give them away right now. I want to hear from you first…
