Geekery: Stephen King’s Multiverse Converges in ‘Castle Rock’
Hulu has started to paint a picture of a town with a lot of dark secrets, and some familiar characters and places. This looks like an excellent show for King fans.
Castle Rock is attempting to pull a good chunk of King’s stories set in/near the fabled town in Maine into a series that’s telling an entirely new story. It’s a lot to take on. J.J. Abrams is executive producer, the show’s writers are Sam Shaw (Masters of Sex, Manhattan) and Dustin Thomason (Lie to Me, The Evidence). The cast includes some familiar names – IT’s Bill Skarsgård and Carrie’s Sissy Spacek are among the names on the central character list.
It’s a toss up depending on how much you like the series’ creators. The premise sounds good, though. If they can pull it off it’ll be worth tuning in to. The official synopsis:
“A psychological-horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse, Castle Rock combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland. The fictional Maine town of Castle Rock has figured prominently in King’s literary career: Cujo, The Dark Half, IT and Needful Things, as well as novella The Body and numerous short stories such as Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption are either set there or contain references to Castle Rock. Castle Rock is an original suspense/thriller — a first-of-its-kind reimagining that explores the themes and worlds uniting the entire King canon, while brushing up against some of his most iconic and beloved stories.”
The latest trailer has a ton of nods, and it’s got a creepy tone that a story like this requires…
Castle Rock’s 10 episode run drops on Hulu July 25th.
