FFG: Legend of the Five Rings – Next Clan Packs Revealed
Legend of the Five Rings is wrapping up the Elemental Cycle and the Scorpion Clan Pack is on the way – so what’s next for the LCG from FFG? A new mystery product and a teaser at which clan packs are coming next!
For the uninitiated, Legend of the Five Rings is a Living Card Game set in a fantastical Japan (with other East Asian Mythology influences) called Rokugan. In it, players construct decks based around the seven clans of Rokugan with each clan having it’s own themes and strategies for winning. The Game is released in Cycles, typically consisting of 6 Dynasty Packs, along with Clan Pack releases. Aside from the core set, there have been 2 Cycles releases along with 1 Clan Pack with another on the way.
Fantasy Flight Games has also experimented with a rapid release cycle for the game by launching “6 packs in 6 weeks” releases for the Dynasty Packs. This is needed because the game is a competitive game and having all the cards in a Dynasty come out relatively quickly helps to ensure a (somewhat) level playing field.
The Clan Packs are generally specific to one Clan, but also contain a handful of cards for the other Clans that typically help to curb that particular Clan’s theme. For example the Phoenix Clan Pack “Disciples of the Void” also contained some non-Phoenix cards designed to counter it:
Again, because the game is designed for competative play, these cards are included for balance reasons. That said, these Clan Packs are pretty valuable for their specific Clan. When combined with the core set and the Dynasty Packs you will have quite the arsenal of cards to build from. Which brings us to the news for today from FFG:
Underhand of the Emperor is the latest Clan Pack to be announced, but it won’t be the last. After this expansion’srelease in October, the remaining five Clan Packs will enter an accelerated release schedule, ensuring that every clan gets their time in the spotlight sooner rather than later.

That’s right, the next two clan packs are Unicorn and Crane. The rest of the packs are going to come out with an “accelerated release schedule” so they will all be out before the end of next year. That’s great for L5R players around the globe as it should keep everyone competitive and on a (mostly) level playing field.

Also in October, you can expect to see the announcement of the next product coming to Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game. While the details of this product remain shrouded in mystery for now, we can say it is not a Clan Pack or a new cycle—instead, it is an entirely new type of product.
Hmm…I wonder what this could be! I doubt it will be a new core set – but maybe it could be some type of Deluxe Expansion. Many of FFG’s other LCGs have them as part of their product lines. Then again, it could something completely new and different. They already have Playmats and Books…I’m personally hoping it some new type of Official Multiplayer Boxed set. That would be awesome as L5R is a great game for Multiplayer.
