GW Grognard: Breaking News – No Controversy at Big Event!
Today we talk about what happens when a big tourney runs smoothly – and how gamers react.
I thought grits was something you ate?
Hey everyone, Adam, from TFG Radio, here to bring you all the news that’s fit to print (in an electronic format)
As you know, last weekend I attended the Bay Area Open. It is always a lot of fun where I get to see a lot of my 40K friends and fans of the show. I went 3-3 with Imperial Knights, and John went 6-0, also with Imperial Knights, and came in 2nd place. There were plenty of hard fought games and there was plenty of action on the top tables, and Twitch stream, over the course of the weekend. What wasn’t there was any type of controversy or any other big issues.
Disappointing right? Almost every major, known, event in recent memory has had some issue either in regards to the top tables, to the tournament itself. We’ve had incorrect army lists, bad sportsmanship, outright cheating, and bad management, to go along with all the number of small hiccups that occur at any event, let alone a major event. That’s not to say people didn’t try. Some were saying that there was drama with the clocks, that the event was a “shit show”, and that someone had an illegal list (they didn’t). So it really wasn’t for lack of trying to find some big scandal.
Classic troll story
Although some of what I said did actually happen, I’ll let you figure out which ones, it really wasn’t a big deal. A lot of the issues I just mentioned were really a non issue and were easy to correct, or easy to explain (damn you Games Workshop and your Index flow chart). Did everything go smoothly at the event? Of course not. There will always be some type of snag, or hiccup, when you run an event, no matter the size. You cannot control the actions of the hundreds of players at the event you are also attending, but only control how you react to what happens. I think what some people need to do is try to just enjoy the event and not try to create some type of drama or try to make something bigger than it actually is.
Now, I’m not saying just turn a blind eye to things like cheating, modelling for advantage, or some of the other things that could occur at a tournament. What I am saying is don’t go looking for trouble, especially if there isn’t any. If you do that, nothing good will come out of it and it may end up backfiring on you in some karmic way.
