Take a team of 4 different Space Marine Heroes into the Labyrinth of the Necrons–brave the guardians of a forgotten tomb world and take the fight to a slumbering tomb before it can waken as we unbox the new co-op board game from Games Workshop.

We were pretty impressed with the Space Marine Adventures game when it first crossed our desk. And now that we’ve gotten our hands on an actual copy, the hype’s holding out to be true. It’s a game very reminiscent of Space Hulk, but slightly more accessible–which is to be expected, given the purpose of these games. Space Marine Adventures and Blitz Bowl are meant to grab new players, especially those outside of the normal GW audience and introduce them to the wonderful world of GW’s IP.

All in all, this game does a good job of doing exactly that. It does everything it sets out to do. You want a team of Space Marines? Here are five, each from a different Hero chapter. Meet the Salamanders, the Space Wolves, the Ultramarines, the Blood Angels, and the Imperial Fists. Each Space Marine has their own suite of gear you can upgrade them with, special abilities they can activate, and the whole thing is card-based.

Not a bad little squad-based game, though it can get a little repetitive if you’re hoping to play more than just the included levels. Even so, it’s a ton of fun to power up your little plastic battle brother and take them in to fight a horde of continuously spawning Necron tokens until you find the treasure at the heart of the Labyrinth, an Overlord with which you must also do battle.

It’s also the only way you can track down the Space Marines featured here outside of Japan right now, since they are all modeled after the Space Marine heroes line. We like this game, and if you’re looking for a quick pick up and play affair, this is probably the game for you.

Good luck in the Labyrinth, just watch out for any Mazes and Monsters you find along the way.
