Waterdeep: Dragon Heist takes adventurers to the City of Splendors where all manner of danger lurks within its shadowed alleys–but all manner of rewards await those bold enough to take them. Take a look at what new items and monsters you’ll find in this adventure.

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist is a massive urban adventure, which is exciting, because we haven’t seen too much of that in the 5th Edition stories so far. The closest you might get is the Curse of Strahd, or the City sections of Tomb of Annihilation, but by and large they present cities as a hub, rather than sites for adventures on their own. And Water Heist Dragon Times pits players against villainous organizations. Whether it’s Jarlaxle’s crime bois, the agents of the Xanathar, or a bunch of weirdo cultists TOTALLY NORMAL NOBLE HUMANS WITH NOTHING SUSPICIOUS AT ALL you can find myriad foes to oppose your adventurers. As well as the four big villains themselves, all of whom are too big for the party’s collective britches.

Now the adventure itself comes out on Friday, but TODAY we’ve brought you a special preview, because the pre-order listings for 2Water2Deep on D&D Beyond has the option to buy many of the entries separately, which means we’ve got a look at the 12 brand new magic items and 25 brand new monsters included in the book. Well, a look at their names at least. I’m sure we’ll see more shortly, but for now, here’s what you’ll find awaiting you in Waterdeep.

via D&D Beyond

As mentioned, there are 12 new magic items, which are as follows.

  • Azuredge

  • Badge of the Watch

  • Blackstaff

  • Bracer of Flying Daggers

  • Dragonstaff of Ahghairon

  • Feather of Diatryma Summoning

  • Knave’s Eye Patch

  • Lord’s Ensemble

  • Paper Bird

  • Ring of Truth Telling

  • Smokepowder

  • Stone of Golorr

Now there are a few on here that seem real interesting. So, first and foremost, there’s the Blackstaff. Or at the very least, a Blackstaff. Dunno if this is the one that belongs to Khelben “That’s My Nickname” Arunsun or not, but it’s got a cool name, and he is one of the Lords of Waterdeep, so it stands to reason that his staff would be around here somewhere. Speaking of the Lords of Waterdeep–the Lord’s Ensemble are probably magic robes that disguise you and protect you from scrying. I’m real curious about Azuredge and the Knave’s Eye Patch myself.

In the meantime, here are the 25 new monsters. Well, they’re monsters according to D&D Beyond, but it’s pretty clear that many of these are NPCs with stats the party will interact with instead.

  • Manshoon

  • Meloon Wardragon

  • Mirt

  • Remallia Haventree

  • Skeemo Weirdbottle

  • Tashlyn Yafeera

  • Vajra Safahr

  • Victoro Cassalanter

  • Walking Statue of Waterdeep

  • Ziraj the Hunter

Jarlaxle Baenrae is present, of course, and we’ve seen what his stats are like.

It stands to reason that Manshoon and the Cassalanters would be equally as tough. Bad news for an adventurer who hopes to take them on directly. Interestingly there are no stats for Xanathar listed here, but then maybe he shouldn’t have them in the first place. Other notable names include Skeemo Weirdbottle, my new favorite NPC, and the Drow Gunslinger. Firearms in D&D seem to be making more of a splash these days. Possibly where that Smokepowder will come in as well.

At any rate, that’s a brief list of what you’ll find in Waterdeep.

As always, Happy Adventuring!
