Geekery: Claire Foy is Dangerous in New ‘The Girl in Spider’s Web’ Trailer
The girl with the dragon tattoo is returning to the big screen with an all new mystery, with very high stakes.
Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series has been translated to both the small and large screen – most recently by David Fincher. The protagonist, Lisbeth Salander, has become an icon since the first book was published. The first three books became best-sellers and won awards, but the untimely death of the author before they were published in put the completion of her story on hold. David Lagercrantz was chosen to continue the series 10 years after the first novel was released.
The Girl in the Spider’s Web is based on his first book about Salander and Mikael Blomkvist. The journalist is contacted by an old source that claims to have information is vital to the United States, information that has long reaching implications. He contacts his old friend for help, and they’re both plunged into a tangle of hackers, spies, and government secrets. The new movie changes some things, but the core of the story is still there.

I like Claire Foy, but I don’t think she’s quite right for this. She doesn’t have the edge Rooney Mara or the intensity of Noomi Rapace. I do understand director Fede Alvarez’s reasoning for not casting either in his movie.
“There was a lot of debate — but not with me — mostly debate among the studio, if they [were] taking that route or not. Eventually, I think it was me coming in, saying, I preferred to have my own cast. As a director, I just didn’t like the idea of taking someone else’s cast. As much as I admired Fincher as a filmmaker I think Rooney Mara is Fincher’s Lisbeth, right? And I wanted to find my own.”
