Geekery: First Look at Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker – It’s Not What You’d Expect

Todd Phillips’ origin movie is being filmed right now. It looks rather different than what DC has done recently – less flashy, more down to whatever Earth they’re on for this story. There are no gold teeth or green hair or purple suit in this debut photo.

Phillips is mainly known for the Hangover trilogy, his next project is an origin story of one of the most popular characters in the DC universe: the Joker. The script by Phillips and Scott Silver reportedly takes inspiration from The King of Comedy. Maybe some idolization gone horribly wrong? It’s been said that it’s more of a gritty cautionary tale, not exactly a run of the mill DC movie. This character design falls right in line with that. I’ll leave it to y’all to make other comparisons.

The cast is lead by Joaquin Phoenix and also includes Zazie Beetz, Marc Maron, and Robert De Niro.
