Production has begun on the live action Star Wars series, and the first official photos have made their way to the internet. Including a weapon you might recognize from an animated short from long, long ago.

Mandalorians will finally get their due when this new series debuts on Disney Play next year. There are some theories about it being focused on the restoration of Mandalore after the fall of the Empire after the civilization retreated as the result of the the Battle of Jakku, but that hasn’t been confirmed.  What we know for sure

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

While the movie releases are slowing down, the streaming shows are full steam ahead. If reports are to be believed Disney has spent a pretty penny on the 10 episode first season – at least $100 million according to sources around the net. It’s set to be one of the big drivers for Disney Play. They’ve gathered an all star directing team to lend their talent to the series:

  • Star Wars alum Dave Filoni will direct the first episode
  • Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones)
  • Rick Famuyiwa (Dope)
  • Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World)
  • Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok)

Favreau shared the first photos of the unnamed Madalorian on his Instagram along with a couple of other props. The brief looks pretty darn good – they’ve got good costume designers, let’s hope they have good writers.

If you’ve been unfortunate enough to have seen the Star Wars Holiday Special, you might recognize this – it’s a Amban phase-pulse blaster. It’s a medium range weapon that’s built to take down large creatures. Boba Fett used it to save Luke Skywalker from a Panna Dragon in the animated segment of the special.
