40K: Our 5 Favorite Astra Militarum Stratagems From Vigilus Defiant

We talked Adeptus Astartes and we’ve talked about the Xenos Stratagems. Now we’re focusing on the anvil of the Imperium – The Astra Militarum! Today we’re looking at 5 of their stratagems that we found most interesting and useful on the tabletop. These might not be the “best” but they do open up options for the AM commanders out there.
Remember – just like the rest of the Special Detachements, you have to spend the CP to unlock these stratagems for that particular Detachment. But if there is one army that is swimming in CPs it probably the Astra Militarum.
Suppressive Fire
You really have to ask yourself if it’s worth it to trade an artillery unit’s firepower for 1 turn of shooting to slow down an enemy infantry unit for a turn. In some cases, you absolutely need to stall their movement. In others…it might be better to just blow them up. Either way, this stratagems opens up some interesting tactical possibilities and that’s why we like it.
Mechanised Fire Support
Sure, this is “just” Chimera or Taurox shooting – but it’s shooting that happens in Overwatch and they hit on a 4+ regardless of modifiers. That seems like it would be very useful for the right army! In some cases, they might even hit better than normally because they ignore modifiers. Accurate shooting during the Overwatch is a tool that can be very undervalued and now the AM have access to it with this stratagem.
Unyielding Advance
Grinding Advance is a great ability. Getting to shoot again with your turret weapon can really do some damage. With this stratagem you can still move your full move and shoot twice! This one adds more mobility to an already mobile fighting force – and that’s why we picked it for our list!
Precision Drop
Pinpoint Accuracy mixed with a flawless safety record. The Tempestus Scions are going to land where you need them and have a full squad of whatever special weapons you need right where you need them. That’s an impressive feat. It’s only 1 CP and you don’t need to spend it – unless you really need them to be at full strength before you drop in a warzone.
No Quarter Given!
This one is pricey but if you time it right you can really make your opponent pay for a charge into your ranks. You could use this on that squad you know is about to get wiped out (like a Conscript Squad) or you could use it on an more elite option like Crusaders. We liked that it’s tactically flexible in that regard and that’s why we picked it!
