40K Top 5: Favorite Adeptus Astartes Stratagems From Vigilus Defiant
The Space Marines are getting a TON of new toys to play with in Vigilus Defiant. Today we look at a handful of our favorite Adeptus Astartes Stratagems!
There were a lot of Stratagems to go through with all the new Special Detachments in Vigilus Defiant. We picked a handful that we thought were pretty solid and thematic out of the lot. By no means are these “clearly the best ever” but we liked them! Remember, these all require you to take another Stratagem to use – the Specialist Detachment – in order to “activate” the option to use these.
With that said – let’s dive in!
Strike First, For Ultramar!
This stratagem isn’t cheap. It’s going to cost you 4 CP if you factor in the Victrix Guard option (but that 1 extra CP also unlocks other stuff). That said, it really could be a combat flipper. The really powerful thing about this one is that the fight happens at the END of the opponent’s charge phase – that’s HUGE. It’s a Ultramarine Sucker Punch and it’s could potentially turn a really bad charge for you into a win.
Bolt Storm
Now this “only” applies to Auto Bolt Rifles which have a 24″ range. However, that still makes these guns auto hit their target at 12″ and that’s why we like it. Turning all your guns into 2 hits seems pretty solid! That’s just 20 to wound rolls at that point. How many times have you been frustated by a pesky Assassin that can only be hit on 6s? Or what about some tricky xenos unit that somehow had a magical -4 to be hit!? Well now you just ignore all that and put the hits on them. Slap a Lieutenant nearby and you’ve got a nasty unit that can put some serious wounds on a target!
Heroes of Rynn’s World
Heroes of Rynn’s World is a mini-tesla for your Liberator Strike Force units! And who doesn’t like a mini-tesla. It’s cheaper than some of the other options and it’s a little extra boost – as long as you stick to the plan (which is always to Roll 6s). According to my colleague JR, “It’s just one more reason to vote for Pedro.”
Suffer Not The Unclean To Live
Okay – this one was all me. I was a huge fan of the Black Templar back in the day and this Stratagem feels like a direct call-out to the heyday of the BT. The extra attack is great on the Sword Brethern Units PLUS you get to re-roll wound rolls for their attacks until the end of the phase! It’s 2 CP well spent.
Swift Strike
Hey Dark Angels players – specifically Ravenwing – how about a “Hit-and-Run” type stratagem that you’ll actually like? This Swift Strike ability is pretty mean. For 2 CP you can make your Ravenwing Attack Squadron pull out of a melee AFTER they’ve gotten in their cheap shot. Just like your Primarch #RussRemembers.
