The long rumored series is being produced for CBS All Access. It joins a host other projects being developed for the streaming service by Star Trek veteran Alex Kurtzman.

During Discovery‘s first season the crew found themselves dealing with a Mirror Universe – one in which Phillipa Georgiou was a former Emperor of nefarious Terran Empire. This will be explored more in the new series, which is written by Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt. Yeoh is excited about exploring the character more. In a statement she said:

“I’m so excited to continue telling these rich ‘Star Trek’ stories. Being a part of this universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play. I can’t wait to see where it all goes – certainly I believe it will go ‘where no WOMAN has ever gone before!”

There’s no release date set – but they released a sneak peek around when the Mirror Universe debuted that will give you a taste of what’s to come.

In other Trek news: the fourth Star Trek movie  in JJ Abram’s rebooted universe has officially been shelved. It looks like Paramount is more interested in expanding their streaming offerings right now. Along with the Yeoh series they are reviving the animated series as Star Trek: Lower Decks, which will has Rick and Morty‘s Mike McMahan on board as its creator. There’s also a possible Starfleet Academy series, a mini series focused on Khan Noonien Singh, and more Short Treks by new writers and directors.

There’s a lot for fans to look forward to in the coming year – they just won’t find it on the big screen. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing for the franchise.
