The first trailer was shown during an MCU panel at Comic Con Experience in Brazil early in December, but the crowd was all sworn to secrecy. Rumors of when it was going to show up in the wild started soon after – after over a month of waiting, it finally dropped this morning.

The official synopsis from Marvel Studios…

Peter Parker returns in Spider-Man: Far From Home, the next chapter of the Spider-Man: Homecoming series! Our friendly neighborhood Super Hero decides to join his best friends Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation. However, Peter’s plan to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks are quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks, creating havoc across the continent!

The first look finally reveals who Jake Gyllenhaal is playing because he’s certainly not playing Spider-Man.

There’s a lot to take in there, but the biggest is Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio (aka Quentin Beck) – complete with the character’s signature fishbowl helmet. The master of illusion and special effects artist is one of Spidey’s most dangerous enemies. He’s especially talented with chemistry, robotics and hypnotism; which he uses to create gadgets and illusions that specifically counter Spider-Man’s unique abilities. Mysterio was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and first appeared in the comics in 1964.

Gyllenhaal looks fantastic in this interpretation of Mysterio’s costume with flowing cape, clasps embossed with a magical eye, and boxy gauntlets. The chest plate is a new addition to his usual bright green suit, it fits in with the look of MCU villains quite nicely though. I’m digging it.

Marvel tends to be super tight-lipped when it comes to revealing details on the big plot lines in the MCU, so some of what’s shown here is a bit of a surprise. While this is coming out after End Game on the release calendar, there’s nothing here that solidly shows it happens after the highly anticipated Avengers movie. At least, not to me – it looks like it could be slid back on the timeline. That one won’t be answered until End Game arrives in April.

I enjoyed Homecoming, and Tom Holland is the best live-action Spider-Man we’ve gotten. I’m definitely excited about this one.

Spider-Man: Far From Home swings into theaters July 5th.
