A new group of space marines fight more demons on Mars in this low budget adaptation of the iconic video game. This looks like a great choice if you like watching bad movies.

The first big budget Doom movie didn’t go over well with critics or audiences, and didn’t recoup its production cost. The Dwayne Johnson led cast wasn’t bad, but the movie had questionable CG and a predictable story that made what should have been a fun action movie into a wonky mess. It’s become a bit of a classic because of how bad it is; a shining example of horrible video game adaptations.

This new take has a much smaller budget, and won’t get a theater release. The story is simple and familiar:

Doom follows a group of space marines as they respond to a distress call from a base on a Martian moon, only to discover it’s been overrun by demonic creatures who threaten to create Hell on Earth.

That horrible wig. That honking huge sci-fi rifle thing that’s obviously made of plastic. That emotional dialog. It’s… um… yeah. That’s a movie. The cast is a who’s who of B/C/D movies and one off TV guest stars. It’s directed by Tony Giglio (S.W.A.T.: Under Siege, Death Race 4: Beyond Anarchy) for Universal 1440 Entertainment, which is an offshoot of the studio giant that specializes in direct distribution. They’re also working on another Death Race sequel, a new Tremors movie, and an adaptation of Aliens Ate My Homework.

If you’re into straight to video weirdness and/or enjoy the fun that unintentionally bad movies can be, this is for you. It’s due out later this year on VOD and streaming.
