The Emperor’s Legion spotlights the Lion Clan with 78 new cards (three copies of twenty-five different cards and one copy each of three different cards) for Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game. Here, look for an emphasis on recursion, revenge, and righteousness.

The Lion’s Heroes

Up first we have Matsu Gohei who’s ability allows him to stay unbowed as long as he’s got some fellow Bushi at his side. This will allow him to participate in multiple conflicts in a turn. That extra 3 military might just won’t seem to go away.

Voice of the Ancestors is another character card that is a 4 cost Shugenja. Basically, when the Voice of the Ancestors is in play, he can allow you to bring in Lion Characters from your discard pile that acts as spirit attachments for other characters which allows them to contribute their military and political might to conflicts. Honor the fallen, honor your ancestors!

Ashigaru Levy is a free character that can cause other Ashigaru Levy to pop-up and join the fight. That can occur for EACH copy that shows up. While they have a sad 1 military skill, when an army of peasants rises up, it can be quite the showstopper.

The Lion’s Den

The Lion Clan is also gaining access to another Stronghold option. The Kyuden Ikoma is one mean province to try to face off against. Its reaction allows you the Lion player to bow non-Champion characters when they lose a conflict as the attacker. It makes defending a tricky proposition.

Another card at the Lion’s disposal is the new Embrace Death card. When a Bushi character loses a conflict as the attacker you can sacrifice it to choose an opponent’s character to also take out. Unless that character has a fate on it, in which case you remove 1 fate. This is a pretty mean card to have in your hand as it could cause your opponent to lose a character a turn early – or even immediately. That sure takes the fun out of successfully defending!

The Scorpion Waits

Like all the other Clan Packs, The Emperor’s Legion also has cards for the other clans designed to help counter the strategies of that particular clan – it’s the whole “know your enemy” philosophy. One character we’ve seen so far is from the Scorpion Clan and he’s pretty effective at neutering those lions right where in counts: Their Honor.

Reducing the Honor of Lion Clan characters can really put a damper on their military effectiveness – but perhaps even more so on their weak political side. Becoming honored and adding their glory is one of their main ways of being able to compete in political challenges. Shosuro Denmaru hits them right where it counts!

On the blood-stained battlefields of Rokugan, one clan stands head and shoulder above the rest. To face the Lion Clan in battle is an unenviable task for any clan. From their Matsu warriors to Akodo tacticians to the Kitsu who utilize the past itself to overwhelm their foes in combat. To face the Lion Clan in combat is an unenviable task for any clan.
