In a game where you play as bounty hunters, mercs, and smugglers, you know there is going to be action. Come see how the Action Step works in Outer Rim!

Star Wars: Outer Rim is a new board game coming from Fantasy Flight Games that explores the seedier elements of Star Wars. Life on the Outer Rim is lawless and tough – but if you can make a name for yourself, you can retire with a nice nest-egg and be the most infamous person in the galaxy!

Bring On The Action

In today’s preview, FFG goes over the Action step in the game in greater detail. This is the part of the game where you’re going to perform any number of actions from exchanging cards, resolving abilities, dropping off bounties and cargo, and typically also when you’re going to purchase new cards from the Market Decks.

These decks are really the heart of a lot of the game. Each one represents a different part of life on the Outer Rim – from new gear, upgrades, ships, and more. Each of them has a cost associate with them and to buy them, you’ll need to earn credits. You can earn those credits by taking jobs from the Job Deck:

The pay off for these jobs can give you quite the leg-up, but failure can be punishing. Some jobs require various skill checks along the way to pass. There are also other jobs that involve deliver missions and such. The type of cargo can provide it’s own set of choices as legal cargo is relatively safe – and the payouts are lower. Illegal cargo, however, is much more rewarding and the danger matches.

If you prefer a more aggressive approach, bounting hunting might be your thing. The bounty deck will net you both credits and fame – just keep in mind you’re going to need to subdue your prey and they will put up a fight.

The Gear and Mod decks are pretty handy to puchase from – if you can afford them. If you’re looking for a leg-up in combat or if you want to give your ship some extra abilities, these decks are where you’re going to want to shop.

The ship deck is pretty obvious – that’s where you can purchase a new ship! More cargo, mod slots, and crew space means you can do more things – oh and don’t discount the raw stats those new ships might have, too. Then there is the other place you can get gear from: The Luxury deck. While this deck might sound trivial, many of these cards contribute directly to your fame which is part of how you win the game!
