40K Deep Thought: Heroes and the Obsolete Live Forever In Apocalypse
Apocalypse is the gift that keeps on giving – even before it arrives. It looks like GW found the perfect home for all the game’s old units.
We’ve seen all kinds of things in the Apocalypse datasheets from the the new like Intercessors all the way back to forgotten gems like the Last Chancers. There are some gems from the future hidden as well. We’ve already seen a first peek at Renegade Knights, and the upcoming Primaris Eliminators weapon options.
Warhammer 40,000
We’ve been talking for a while about how 40K is getting bloated, and GW needs some way to slowly back away from units they no longer make. It’s a tough tightrope to walk. They are already pulling units from codexes that are no longer in production, and Forge World has moved some older units to Power Level only datasheets. On the one hand, GW has no need to keep updating rules for units they don’t currently make. On the other hand they don’t want to make customers feel abandoned with models they bought and lovingly painted, but have no rules (looking at you Squats).
Enter Apocalypse
Now take a look some of the old gems uncovered in Apocalypse:
Last Chancers Indeed
We are seeing some odd units in Apoc. Not only are the Last Chancers in there, but other long lost ones like the Tallarn Mukaali Riders, Knarloc Riders, and OMG, the neolithic Dark Eldar Raven is in there!
Just putting this guy on the table gets you all the style points!
It also carves a path for GW to use in the future to send units off into Apoc once they are retired from the main 40K game. Your toy’s aren’t obsolete, they live on in Apocalypse – which is probably more fun anyway. It’s a win win for everyone. GW gets old units off their hands and gains better control over 40K meta, while the old-timers still get to have their veteran models duke it on on the mega battles of Apocalypse. Over there, if the points are off a little on some ancient units you can’t even buy, it won’t hurt anything too badly.
Dark Eldar Raven – have you ever seen one in person?
We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out as 40K and Apocalypse evolves, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see some old chestnuts moved on over.
