Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce Dead of Night, a new expansion for Arkham Horror Third Edition!

In Dead of Night, investigators explore the facets of Arkham best left unseen in the light of day. Organized crime builds a strong foothold in the city, secret cults labor for a dark master, an alien moon hangs overhead, and unknowable horrors stalk the night. This expansion includes two all-new scenarios, new encounters for every location in Arkham, new monsters and anomalies, a new monster deck holder, and four new investigators to face these fresh horrors, armed with new spells, items, and allies.

If you haven’t played Arkham Horror Third Edition, it’s a different beast than it’s predecessors. It has more of a focus on the narrative than before and has some really interesting mechanics to help move the game along. It’s also an Arkham Horror game so victory isn’t guaranteed! The new expansion looks to build upon the foundation of the board game with a slew of new goodies including four new investigators and a whole lot more.

Gangs of Arkham

In the town of Arkham, there has been two rival gang families that have claimed the town – the O’Bannions and the Sheldons. They’ve had a history of violence but, until recently, they have had an uneasy peace. One of the new scernarios puts the investigators in the middle of a brewing gang war – Shots in the  Dark has you attempting to bring peace before something far worse happens…

Now, why would paranormal investigators be interested in a gang war? Because this is Arkham and nothing is ever as it seems. As one of the two new scenarios in the gang, Arkham will introduce a bunch of new story cards that you will use during your investigators.

Will you pick a side? Or will you risk the wrath of the Mythos Cup? Get to the bottom of this mystery and see if you can save the city – and probably yourself in the process.

New Investigators

In the Preview article, FFG shows off three new investigators: “Skids” O’Toole, Diana Stanley, and Kate Winthrop. You can see the player cards for “Skids” and Kate above as well as the back of the investigator cards for “Skids” and Diana. Unfortunately, we only get information on “Skids” for now.

“Skids” has some interesting stats but has a focus limit of 0. That would be problematic for most investigators as Focusing is a great way to boost your stats and is a key mechanic. However, “Skids” has some tricks up his sleeves. His special ability allows him to focus a skill of his choice whenever he rolls a 1 on a check and that allows him to rise above his Focus limit of o. Pretty handy!

Futhermore, his innate Talent is “On The Lam” which not only nets him 2 more health and sanity, he can also use it to disengage and exhaust all non-epic monsters engaged with him. That’s a pretty powerful ability! And depending on which card you choose to add to his kit at the start, can lead to very different play-styles:

On The Lam pairs really nicely with Switchblade for a quick point of damage on the disenage. I’d have to double check the ruling on Switchblade, but if I’m reading this correctly, you could get stuck in with a group of non-epic monsters, take 1 horror, disenage with all of them, and stick them all with 1 point of damage. That could be a pretty nice way to finish them off or at least make them bleed a bit!

The other option is to go with Light Fingers. This basically allows you to snag cards from the item display by stealing them – just don’t fail or you’ll end up with the Wanted condition which can have reprocussions later on down the line.

Kate Winthrop pulled the collar of her long coat tight against her neck to ward o the creeping chill of a damp autumn night. With a squeal of tires, a long black car raced by, pursued closely by a police wagon. Kate pressed herself up against the iron railing of the bridge over the Miskatonic to keep clear of the chaos.

She’d read in the papers about the recent upsurge in violent crime and felt the increasing tension all around the city. As the nights grew longer, she noticed a deeper darkness lurking in the shadows around Arkham, and the instruments in her research lab at the university were responding to some influence that she couldn’t observe.

Something was coming.

Step into a world of horror with Dead of Night, a new expansion for Arkham Horror Third Edition!
