D&D Avernus: New Monsters Confirmed
Abyssal Chickens, Gnomish Mind Flayers… what more could you possibly want? Come meet two of the newest monsters coming soon to D&D.
Join Chris Perkins, DM to the stars, and Todd Kenreck as they unveil two new monsters, due out for D&D in the next little while. We’ve got a look at Abyssal Chickens, which will be appearing in Baldur’s Gate: Descent Into Avernus, and then a much more distant monster–but one that is newly confirmed: the Gnome Flayer… take a look!
There’s just something about a monster that is ugly but cute that you can’t resist. All it takes is just a little bit of personality and spite that makes you want to see just what these critters can do. We did a little digging, and it turns out there’s a little more about the Abyssal Chickens out there. Let’s take a look, courtesy of Chris Perkins:

And here’s a closer look, where we get a sense for just how terrible this thing actually is in combat.
Not only does it fall if it is airborne at the end of its turn, it also is blind outside of 30 ft. It gets two attacks, which gives it a leg up on most CR 1/4 creatures, but it’ll be interesting to see just where these fowl fiends appear in the adventure. Still, if gaming has taught me anything over the years, it’s that if you encounter chickens, you never should attack them. The consequences are dire otherwise.
As for the Gnome Flayers–this one’s real interesting. You never see small mind flayers–but it makes sense, a brain is a brain, and if the Illithid tadpole takes over goa’uld style, then of course the host body would transform and become a diminullithid, as I’ve taken to calling them. Hilarity (and brain-eating) ensues.
Happy Adventuring!
