D&D: Harper’s Tale Helps Children Fight Cancer
One child’s fight against Leukemia has turned into a campaign to benefit children with cancer throughout the world–a D&D campaign you won’t want to miss.
Normally the heroes in Dungeons and Dragons are confined to the pages of character sheet or adventures, but earlier this year, when a game designer’s daughter was diagnosed with leukemia, a community of creatives stepped up to show that the real heroes of D&D are the people that make up the community. And soon you’ll be able to join them in a fight to benefit Friends of Kids with Cancer, a charity organization devoted to enriching the daily lives of children undergoing treatment for, and survivors of, cancer and blood-related diseases. Friends of Kids with Cancer helps to provide educational, emotional, and recreational support for children during their treatments.
It all starts with Matt Corley, the game designer behind Saturday Morning Scenarios, whose youngest daughter, Harper, was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year. After a member of Friends of Kids with Cancer gave Harper her first good day in the long process, Corley and his daughter were determined to give back. Now they have gathered together a team of talented writers and artists from throughout the D&D community including Dyson Logos (whose maps you love whether you know it or not), Ashley Warren (who brought you the Uncaged Anthology among other works), and a host of others–and all of these folks will be creating Harper’s Tale. Harper’s Tale is a set of ten linked adventures that will take heroes from levels 1-10 and depicts everything you’d want. Sacrifice, perseverance, redemption, an evil druid. Take a look.
On February 2nd, 2019, my youngest daughter, Harper, was diagnosed with leukemia. The next few days were hard. Two days later, while sitting in bed, Kelly from Child Services came in with a gift card from Friends of Kids with Cancer. Harper immediately perked up, and within 15 minutes she’d sent me out of the hospital to spend that money!! Friends of Kids with Cancer gave us our first good day. Harp is in remission and we want to give back some of what they’ve given us.
Three months later, that good day has turned to good weeks, good months, Harp is in remission, and will be on maintenance treatments soon! Friends of Kids with Cancer has been with us every step of the way, and we want to give back some of what they’ve given us.
That’s where Harper’s Tale comes in. As mentioned before, it’s a campaign that will be crowdfunding in September, with all proceeds being donated to Friends of Kids with Cancer. Here’s a taste of what’s in store.
Harper’s Tale is a series of ten linked adventures telling an epic story of sacrifice, perseverance, and redemption. The heroes will investigate, battle, and learn the true origins of the threat to their home. The adventure is based on an outline Harper and I wrote after coming home from the hospital. It will take your party from 1st to 10th level as they explore and thwart the machinations of the evil druid E’thor.
We have assembled a team of talented writers, artists, and creatives including Bill Barnett, Gwendy Bee, MT Black, Donathin Frye, Craig Judd, Anna Landin, Dyson Logos, Ben McFarland, Anna Meyer, Hannah Rose, Jessica Ross, Kienna Shaw, Jeff Stevens, Brian Suskind, Clara Suskind, and Ashley Warren. The adventure will be available in PDF and print-on-demand via DriveThruRPG. There will be a no-art version for those on a budget, and backers can also order hard copies for Friends of Kids with Cancer to distribute.
And like any good campaign, they already have stretch goals planned along with a goal in mind:
When the product funds, Friends of Kids with Cancer will receive a donation of over $3,000. They will have the adventure in electronic form to distribute, and they will recieve books that backers have purchased for the kids.
At $15,000 raised, we will deliver 100 soft-cover, full-color, premium books to Friends of Kids with Cancer for them to distribute. Their donation also increases to nearly $4,500.
AdvertisementAt $18,000 raised, all books delivered to Friends of Kids with Cancer will upgrade to hardcover, full-color, premium books. The donation to Friends of Kids with Cancer increases to almost $6,500.
Our final stretch goal is at $25,000 and adds a chapter showing the original drawings and writings that Harper put together for Harper’s Tale. Our donation to Friends of Kids with Cancer will be over $11,000!!
It all begins September 3rd, 2019, so be sure and check back then. And if you’re interested in more information, you can sign up below to learn more:
