D&D: More Details About Baldur’s Gate 3 Emerge

Since the announcement of Baldur’s Gate 3 yesterday, a few more details have been confirmed about the upcoming game, including a release date. Larian CEO Swen Vincke spoke with PCGamesn about BG3, bringing to light the fact that the game will be built on a tweaked version of the 5th Edition ruleset, its connection to the upcoming Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus module, due out September 17th, and more. Here are some of the specifics.
BG3 is based on the fifth edition [of D&D]. We started by setting out the ruleset very meticulously, and then seeing what worked and what didn’t work – because it is a videogame, and D&D was made to play as a tabletop game. So for the things that didn’t work, we came up with solutions.
The cool thing we found is that a lot of what makes D&D, D&D, actually survived the translation, so I think that if you like Dungeons and Dragons and you want to play BG3, you’re going to be happy.
When asked where BG3 would fit in with the D&D Universe, Vincke pointed out that it would be set directly after the upcoming Descent into Avernus, and in fact, Larian and WotC worked together extensively to develop ties to both products. If you play BG3 and Avernus, you’ll see some references, but Vincke made it clear that Baldur’s Gate 3 is the next chapter of what happens to Baldur’s Gate as a city.
Which, from the image up above, looks like there’s a Mind Flayer Invasion. If that’s not a massive living mind flayer ship in the top part of the sky, I don’t know what is…so, hold on to your brains.
Other important details include the fact that the game will be single and multiplayer, with folks able to play the campaign cooperatively with their friends, much like in Divinity: Original Sin 1 & 2. No word yet on if Divinity’s Gamemaster Mode has made the jump or not–but from what we’ve heard, it sounds like BG3 will be worth getting excited about.
