GW Rumor Engine: Opulent Eyes
Are they Gems? Are they Eyes? Why not both? Check out the latest Rumor Engine from GW and decide for yourself.
This latest Rumor Engine is a doozy. We have three sets of gems (or are they eyes) on what appears to be some type of armor plating. Then again, take a look and you tell me:
The Rumour Engine reveals the truth – in maddeningly tiny, puzzle-like fragments. Does it seek to illuminate us or to erode our sanity?
My gut reaction is that these baubles are just too fancy for mere mortals. If they are gems, they seem very Aelvish to me. Although I’m not quite sure which branch of the family tree they would hail from.
The Sisters of the Watch are big on gems on their armor. But they are hardly the first or the last Aelf models to rock gemstones.
The Eternal Guard are another and they like to pair their gems with ornate filigree, too. Seem like these models and the Rumor Engine could be related.
Let’s go down the Aelf rabbit hole for a second. In the world that was, we had three flavors – High, Dark, and Wood Elf. Now, we’ve seen “re-imaginings” of all three – sort of. The Sylvaneth motif leaned hard into the Wood/Spirit aspects and kind of ditched the “Elf” part. The Daughters of Khaine amped-up the Witch Elves of the Dark Elves to 11. And the Idoneth Deepkin, while they aren’t exactly High Elves, are “creations” of Teclis in the lore.
Morathi made the Daughters of Khaine. Teclis made the Idoneth Deepkin. And the Sylvaneth came from Alarielle who basically ditched the remaining Wood Elves (I’m paraphrasing here). The first two (Morathi and Teclis) created these “races” of Aelves from pumping Slaanesh’s stomach (paraphrasing, again). The other Aelven God’s who got in on the action were Tyrion and Malerion.
Tyrion and Teclis are the Twin Aelven Gods of Hysh and Tyrion is known as the Lord of Lumination. We’ve been seeing more lore pointing to both Aelves of Light and Shadow (the Shadow Aelves being part of Malerion’s Realm of Shadow – Ulgu).
All that to say that this Rumor Engine could be teasing us with new Aelves that are either Light or Shadow Aelves. Will this be the case? That remains to be seen – and it could be months out from now. On the plus side, at least this model has already been painted – you can tell from the picture that it’s just been hit with the “Ye Olde Gray-Scale” color slider.

On the other end of the spectrum, we also have the Aeldari to think about, too. I’m not saying those Gems are spirit stones – but I’m not ruling them out either. The Aeldari have a bunch of old miniatures that could use an update, too. So that field is wide open and it’s not just Craftworlds either.
I’m also tossing out the Ambull here as well. Not because I think it’s an Ambull, but rather to remind folks that GW has a whole lot of options they can work with thanks to Blackstone Fortress. Hey – if they need an excuse to bring in some truly strange and fantastical Xeno race (even if it’s just a one-off model), they can do that via Blackstone Fortress. The Ambull is proof of that.
