If you are anything like me, painting a mini is a daunting consideration at best. There are so many steps, so many different paints to consider… it’s hard to know where and how to get started. And once you begin it feels like there’s no going back. So my miniatures sit there, unpainted pieces of plastic or metal just waiting for a splash of color.
Maybe not that much splash
The new Citadel Colour app looks like it can help tackle some of that anxiety. Or if you’re a bold, suave, savvy painter, then it’s there to help manage your paints. There’s a lot of cool stuff you can do with it and that’s what we’re looking at today. Let’s dive in.

We’ve been hard at work redesigning the Citadel Colour app from the ground up to make it your essential painting companion.
The new app has been reformatted for use on whatever device you use, but sleek new UIs are what get your foot in the door. The thing that interested me was the new paint recipe/modeler feature.
We’ve added loads and loads of new colours and models to the app in this update, including a ton of recipes using the new Contrast paints, bringing the total up to 302 colours and 241 miniatures! In fact, we painted almost a full Space Marine Chapter’s worth of new backpacks to provide examples! We’ve also included plenty of new basing schemes for you to try.
It looks so helpful–getting to see how the paint should look on a model, and getting some examples of shading or highlighting in the colors I’m using, on the models I’m using is invaluable. That takes a lot of the work off my shoulders, and lets me just try painting. It helps to have a goal to work towards, but one that I can get a detailed view of.
There’s also a bunch of tutorials to help make everything look even better. That feels a little aspirational, like you could get your army “parade ready.” So there’s always something to say towards. All this to say, the app looks good–and it’s free.
