40K: 3 Chaos Knight ‘Recommended’ Builds From GW
Games Workshop is teasing some more of the Chaos Knight Rules today along with 3 “recommended” builds – lets see how they stack-up!
With Chaos Knights getting a new codex in just days, GW is hyping up the pain train with a preview of things to come. Today, we’re getting a look at 3 knight builds that you’ll be able to take to the tabletop along with some options we haven’t seen before. Let’s study up on these new Chaos Knight teasers!
“The Smasher”
For 387 points, this Knight isn’t too much of an investment. It’s a pretty straight-forward build with two close-combat weapons and it’s purpose is clear: SMASH. Knights are deadly in close-combat but that’s not what makes this build tick. The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure you can give this Knight an Artefact of Tyranny. Thanks to Corrupted Heirlooms, that shouldn’t be a problem:
And the reason for that is the Artefact that really makes this build work is the BRUTAL new Khornate Target:
Did you have invulnerable saves? Well those are now OFF. Get ready to take the full weight of a close-combat Knight’s attacks to the face! The Smasher INDEED!
“The Tower of Terror”
This is a 600 point Chaos Knight that’s basically the Knight Valiant – ie, the Dominus-Class Knight you rarely see. So why would GW suggest this model? First, you should look at their recommended Stratagem to use:
Now, the why – and I’ll let them explain:
“We’ve opted to gear the Knight Tyrant with the thundercoil harpoon and conflagration cannon as an assault deterrent, helping you discourage enemy combat units from charging the centre of your line. Where this Knight really comes in handy is with the Ion Aegis Stratagem.
AdvertisementSurround them with a horde of Chaos Cultists or another low-points unit of infantry, and you’ll significantly upgrade their durability. This is fantastic for holding an objective in your backline, creating a living barricade that few armies have the ability to breach. It’s also a great way to support already tough Chaos units that lack invulnerable saves, like Plague Marines in a Death Guard army.”
Okay. I mean, I understand the thought process here – “Big intimidating Knight that’s going to help protect your objective holders and have some scary deterrent weapons for when the enemy closes range.” But, and I’m just tossing this out there, if you’re going to spend 600 points on a Knight why not bring the one that can shoot from downtown and blow stuff up BEFORE it closes ranks? There is a reason the Knight Castellan keeps getting picked over the Valiant. And can’t you use the Stratagem on that version of the Knight Tyrant? Just asking for a friend.
“The Overlord”
It almost feels like this recommendation is cheating because we’re basically getting 3 Knights here. But there is a reason for that. First up, the Knight Desecrator is bringing some heat with that Laser Destructor:
This weapon would be even better if you have a way to re-roll that D6 damage. The good news is this entire formation will give you with the re-rolls thanks to the bonus command points you’ll be able to unlock. Just take the Knower of Profane Secrets Dreadblade Pact which will give you a bonus Command Point and the Tyrant’s Banner too:
Starting with 4 Command Points for this Detachment is already good. Getting a Command Point on a 5+ is even better! Especially when you can do that at the start of every turn. It’s kind of scary to think that Chaos Knights will be their OWN CP Battery. And you won’t have to spend them on re-rolling to hits for your War Dogs thanks to the Desecrator’s other dirty trick:
And if all else fails, spend those extra CP on blanket re-rolls with Trail of Destruction:
“We heard you liked Re-rolls. So we gave you some Re-rolls in your Re-rolls…” Wait a minute, you can’t re-roll a re-roll!
