The Warcry Starter Set has made it’s BoLS Studio debut and we’re unpacking the contents to find out what all the yelling is about.

Warcry is Games Workshop’s next game with a whole lot of room for expansion. It’s a skirmish sized game and the starter has everything you need to dive right in the and get caught up in the battle frenzy:

Skirmish Combat And So Much More

If you’re a fan of Skirmish Games then you’re probably already interested in what Warcry has to offer. But even if you prefer larger scale conflicts, this box is jam-packed with enough terrain to make it appealing to anyone looking to fill-out a tabletop. In total, we counted 7 large sprues worth of GW terrain – which is perfect for filling out Warcry’s game board. But if you combined it with other sets, you’d have a great addition to any hobby terrain collection.

Aside from the Terrain, you also get two starter warbands. And by starter warbands, we really just mean you get all the models for those two warbands in the starter set. You probably know them as the Iron Golem and the Untamed.

You’ll get all the sprues you need for their plastic models as well as all the accompanying cards and materials you’ll need to play with those warbands. And speaking of other materials…

The Core Book has the main rules for how to play the game along with lore and background info. Including hints at two OTHER warbands that will probably be joining the game at a later date.

What the Core Book DOES NOT have is the Fighter Cards/rules for all the warbands. Why? That’s a good question. What it does mean is that if you want to play those other warbands, you’ll have to wait unit they get their respective fighter card packs.

At least they are going to be available for all the other warbands in the game, too.

Now, we’re assuming that the warrior cards will probably be in the boxed set – we got a copy of the Cypher Lords Box in the studio and we’ll be unboxing next week to confirm. Given the fact that we didn’t see a Cpyher Lords warrior card pack up for pre-order along side the box, it’s a pretty safe bet that the rules are going to be included in the warband box.

Having said all that, you absolutely need the core book to actually play the game. Not only does it have all the core rules, it’s also got all the post-game campaign info along with everything else you’d expect. If you want to play either warband, need terrain, and need the core book – pick up the starter set. If those things don’t interested you or you already have terrain and want to play a different warband, just wait until your warband of choice is available and order the core book separately.

The starter also comes with tokens, dice, and decks for all the different missions/victory conditions/etc. that you could ever need. All of those things are handy, but you can get away without them – as long as you have your own dice and a core book.

Oh, one final thing: This box also has all the chaos beasties as well. New Chaos Furies (yea!) and Raptors are also in the box.

You’ll also get the cards you need to use them in your games, naturally.

The Warcry starter box is packed with tons of goodies to play the game and if you’re looking to dive in with both feet, it’s a heck of a deal! We will cover the Core Rules in more detail at a later date but our preliminary impression is that this game system feels like it’s somewhere in between Warhammer Underworlds and Kill Team.

Warcry is meant to be fast and tactical. It’s streamlined but not “dumbed down” game play. It shares some of the DNA from AoS but it’s NOT AoS, but skirmish scale. It’s a different system. But if you play AoS/Warhammer Underworlds/Kill Team/40k or pretty much any of the GW games, you’ll be able to pick this one up pretty quick and play right along.

Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for the other 3 warbands to hit shelves either. It seems like GW has really made a big effort to get the majority of Warcry out in a big wave. I can’t wait to see how this one pans out!

Will you answer the call? Warcry is out for Pre-order this weekend!
