Geekery: Adult Swim’s ‘Primal’ Continues to Look Amazing – New Clip
Genndy Tartakovsky’s – of Samurai Jack fame – signature visceral storytelling with gorgeous, colorful animation is coming back to Adult Swim this fall.
The story takes us backward in time – a dinosaur on the brink of extinction makes an unlikely friendship with a caveman at the dawn of evolution. We follow them as they fight for survival in a primordial world. It will feature dinosaurs and small prehistoric mammals, and other critters that are based in imagination as well as science. Take a look at the clip they showed off at SDCC…
It has the same bold, heavy lined style as Samurai Jack; it also reminds me a little of 1940’s Fantasia with the soft backgrounds that really showcase the characters – but way more bloody (this series is not for kids). During the show’s panel at SDCC creator Genndy Tartakovsky said the look of the show was influenced by Frank Frazetta, Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian, and 1970s era fantasy illustrations with vibrant colors.
Those visuals are going to be very important. The show will concentrate on the animation, music, and sound design to get the story across – there will be no dialog. It’s going to be a different, immersive experience for audiences.
If you haven’t watched any of Tartakovsky’s other work, you can check out the full run of Samurai Jack on the Cartoon Network website for free. It’s an amazing series.
