Geekery: ‘Picard’ is Returning to Space & More Details from the Show’s Producers
The new series brings back the beloved Starfleet captain in an all-new story and – according to the showrunner – a brilliant performance from Patrick Stewart.
EW talked to executive producer Alex Kurtzman and showrunner Michael Chabon on the upcoming show. They revealed that the show will be a serialized story rather than episodic, which is new for the character. They also hinted to the possibility of other TnG making appearances in the series (Jonathan Frakes is set to direct two episodes, so he’ll be around). As for the protagonist…
Picard will return to space…
“Events began to unfold that conspire to take Picard back to the stars… He will [go to space], but not in a way that anyone expects.”
It won’t be with Starfleet…
“Because he’s no longer in Starfleet, he no longer carries the weight of that behind him. In some ways, it’s easier to be [a great man] when you’re a captain. But it’s an entirely different thing when you don’t have an army behind you. When you want to get something done and fight an injustice, how do you do that when you’re really only one man?”
Patrick Stewart’s performance is engaging…
“The quality of Patrick’s acting, if anything, has gotten even better over time and he was already a master. He has an ability to hold you riveted even when he’s just sitting and listening.”
The show has a heavy presence at SDCC, so expect more news including a release date and a more revealing trailer to come out this weekend. I’ll be running a bunch of articles next week that cover the giant con – from trailers to toys to juicy details dropped at panels – so make sure you check-in.
Edited to add: The trailer was revealed at the Picard panel shortly after publication. You can check it out below.
