Goatboy’s 40K: Armylists for GW’s USA Grand Tournament
Goatboy here and I’m deciding what to play at the GW USA GT. Let me tell you 1750 is tricky to work with!
I am very used to the ITC 2000 point showdown so trying to figure out something I want to play at 1750 is a bear. Of course right now I am really focusing on Chaos Knights so any list looking at 1750 is lean as heck.
It also helps the event is going to be using GW missions – which lean towards killing stuff and holding things towards the end. Something a more aggressive list like I play is built upon. There is not nearly as much need for board control and secondary control. So my own dumb thoughts of big giant stompy monsters plus whatever else I can fit. Which isn’t a ton – cuz big stompy monsters.
With that in mind – let’s go through some of the ideas I had. We’ll call this a nice splurge of 1750 armies full of low model counts and no forgiveness.
List #1 – Hold me Closer Tiny Dancer – V.1
Super Heavy Detachment – +6CP
Iconoclast Household Ambition
-LoW-
Knight Despoiler – Avenger Gatling Cannon/Hvy Flamer X 2, Heavy Stubber – 485pts
Knight Despoiler – Thermal Cannon X 2, Heavy Stubber – 397pts
Knight Despoiler – Rapid Fire Battle Cannon/Heavy Stubber X 2, Heavy Stubber – 471pts
Super Heavy Auxiliary – 0CP
Infernal Household Ambition
Knight Rampager – Thunderstrike Gauntle/Reaper Chainsword, Heavy Stubber – 387pts
Total: 1740 CP: +9
This one is pretty simple – I have 4 Chaos Knights painted – one of each god. I move them around, I give my backstory of 4 brothers and how they were tempted by Chaos. It looks cool, probably plays ok versus some stuff, and will be fast. Plus again – it is pretty much all painted beyond some fixes and tweaks if I want to get the bases nice and tip top shape. Plus – it lets me play with some relic set ups as I pick the Rampager as my Warlord to gain the +1 attack or move faster if I need to get him there. From there I might burn another CP for a Relic to hit without modifiers or maybe take some Vows to update the Iconoclast Household. Either way it is a very simple army to get ready so I can spend my time working on Client work.
From there I thought – well why don’t I get an army that doesn’t need the Knights to do all the heavy lifting. How about looking at using some of the Purge stuff to bring some broken nonsense to the army. From there I had to figure out a way to utilize the 3 Butcher Cannon dreads I have made because they are already painted all Nurgle like. Throw in a cool Biker sorcerer to throw out a Smite as needed and maybe a Death Hex and we have the beginnings of a mean army.
List #2 – Robots for Days – V.1
Super Heavy Detachment – +6CP
Infernal Household Ambition
-LoW-
Knight Despoiler – Thermal Cannon X 2, Heavy Stubber – 397pts
Knight Despoiler – Thermal Cannon X 2, Heavy Stubber – 397pts
Knight Despoiler – Thermal Cannon X 2, Heavy Stubber – 397pts
Vanguard Detachment – +1CP
-HQ-
Sorcerer on Bike – Mark of Nurgle, Combi-Bolter, Force Axe – 144pts
-Elite-
Helforged Contemptor – Mark of Nurgle, Butcher Cannon X 2 – 138pts
Helforged Contemptor – Mark of Nurgle, Butcher Cannon X 2 – 138pts
Helforged Contemptor – Mark of Nurgle, Butcher Cannon X 2 – 138pts
Pts: 1749 CP +10
Again this one is looking to use the power of massed reroll to hit strength 8 with the Contemptors mixed with the cheapest shooting knight. This many Thermal Cannons means I can do high range damage to just about anything. Hordes could be a problem – especially Plague Bearers. This why I have a Sorcerer on a bike as he can move 14+6″, throw out a Death Hex, and maybe let the rest of the army chew through a ton of Plague Bearers out of a unit. This army I also have pretty much painted beyond finding a few more Thermal Cannons as I have a ton – just probably not 6 of them. This is a pretty tempting list as the dreads look cool, I can make a pretty sweet new Biker Sorcerer, and I have a few tricks up my sleeve like a smite and then throwing a Daemonic Shell at someone.
The final list is another really dumb one that I can blame a buddy on chatting with me. We want to use the idea of Magnus again as it is one of those cool models we all love. I think he is too easy to take out turn 1 – so this list is not really something I am thinking of bringing. It is just a thought process to see if you can fit all this in one place.
List #3 – Please Don’t Shoot Magnus First – V.1
Super Heavy Auxiliary
Legion: Thousand Sons
-LoW-
Magnus – 445pts
Super Heavy Detachment – +6CP
-LoW-
Knight Despoiler – Avenger Gatling Cannon/Hvy Flamer X 2, Heavy Stubber, Iron Storm Missile Pod – 501pts
Knight Despoiler – Thermal Cannon X 2, Heavy Stubber – 397pts
Knight Despoiler – Thermal Cannon X 2, Heavy Stubber – 397pts
Pts: 1740 CP +9
This is another similar list like the first one – just using Magnus as the jack of all trades to throw spells and be a pain. My Magnus only did well when we had the old days of Death Stars and his D spell. Currently mine dies really quickly so this type of list isn’t nearly as interesting to myself. It just doesn’t feel like it has enough. I think the first one will do better just do the nature of its set up. I have a ton of wounds.
Currently my favorite list is the middle one as it has a lot of good shooting mixed with some tricks. Plus it will look neat on the table as I am just full of robots. 1750 is a real hard points limit when trying to play with the big toys. I could go all nutty with assault Robots but that isn’t nearly as exciting as a few armies with shooting and assault capability.
~Until next time – death to the False Emperor and all that jazz.
