The new Clone Wars Era Core Set is coming soon to Star Wars: Legion – Time to preview the droids!
The Droid Army, led by General Grievous, is the other half of the upcoming Star Wars: Legion Clone Wars Core Set. We already got a preview of the Galactic Republic Forces. This time, it’s all about the droids!
The Galactic Republic has become ineffective, crippled by corruption and bureaucracy. The galaxy needs new leadership and—with the backing of commercial entities like the Trade Federation, the Techno Union, and the Retail Caucus—the Separatist Alliance is prepared to do whatever is necessary to seize power.
To that end, these influential organizations have pooled their resources to create a massive droid army capable of overcoming any foe with sheer numbers alone. Led by the nefarious cyborg General Grievous, this army poses a threat to any star system in the galaxy. Soon, you can mobilize your own legions of battle droids and begin a campaign against the Republic with the Clone Wars Core Set for Star Wars™: Legion.
It’s no small task to take on the Galactic Republic with an army of clones and Jedi Knights running around. To even the odds, you’ll need strong leadership and an army of fearless troopers yourself! Good thing the Separatist Alliance just so happens to have those very things.
General Grievous is no joke! Clocking in at 175 points base, he’s got a particular skill set – enough to give Liam Neeson a run for his money. With his pair of Trophy Lightsabers, he’s more than a match for those pesky Jedi commanders running around. He can Block, he’s Impervious, Relentless, and he’s a Jedi Hunter! Brutal. And then there are his command cards.
Trained in your Jedi Arts is a great card for taking a step away – only to dive right back in with his weapons once again.
Supreme Commander can cause a cascade of orders to rain down on your forces (more on that below). That Guardian 2 plus Guardian during a melee attack is going to come in pretty handy.
And finally Crush Them! is his last command card. This one helps you take advantage of the defeated enemy units with some extra surge tokens.
Grievous also has a few other upgrade cards you can take that will help turn a trickle of orders into a hurricane of pain. Aggressive Tactics can payoff in dividends when used correctly.
Meet The Droids
Any army can have a great commander, but the troops are the backbone of those forces. While the individual Droid Trooper might be a push-over, once you get them in a coordinated block, they are nigh unstoppable.
B1 Battle Droids are you typical rank and file droids. They come in 6-packs and seem like they have a limited number of options. AI: Attack forces them to attack if able. But their second ability is where the magic happens. Coordinate: Droid Trooper allows you to pass your orders along. Here’s the example FFG used to illustrate this:
One order, Six units. That’s 36 tin cans coming at you…hope you’re thirsty.
Now, these droids do have a couple of upgrades they can take:
These will certainly help, but their true strength comes in well managed formation movement.
If you need some heavier firepower, the Droidekas are your weapon of choice.
These balls of death have a slightly better AI set of orders with AI: Attack, Move. So at least you have a little versatility. Generator 1 allows you get get a shield back and with 4 shields that could be pretty handy! These Droidekas pack the dreaded Dual Twin Blaster Cannons and they aren’t pulling any punches with that firepower.
