Warhammer Underworlds: New Banned & Restricted List Updated
Games Workshop’s Ultimate Competitive Miniatures Game has updated the banned and restricted list – check out what’s changed!
One thing is constant for competitive gaming and that is the need for change. The ‘Meta Game’ is real and is can very easily stagnate and make the game become dull – that’s why it’s important for the design team to take a look at the overall meta, take in player feed back, and make real adjustments. In some cases maybe it’s just an FAQ or Errata that needs to come out to make minor tweaks or adjustments to the game to ensure a healthy meta. In other cases, the dev team really has to take a hard look at stuff and put their foot down. With the banned and restricted list update, this is one of those “foot down” changes.
What’s New Is Old – The Cycle Continues

GW didn’t feel a need to add any more cards to the Banned List (but there are a hand full of cards that have been banned in the past – 4 total). As for the Restricted cards, remember that you can only include Five (5) TOTAL restricted cards in your two (2) DECKS:
“You cannot include more than five restricted cards across your objective and power decks in an official WarhammerUnderworlds tournament.”
This is pretty limiting but not crippling for deck construction. GW felt that these cards had a place in the game but might be considered too “Go To” or obvious card picks for deck construction. That brings the total number of Restricted cards up to 26. Considering the size of the card pool, having 30 cards banned or restricted really isn’t too bad. Especially if that is going to help maintain the balance and ensure a healthy meta.
Personally, I’d like to see this idea of banned and restricted options rolled out to other GW games… but alas, not all of their games are supposed to be “The Ultimate Competitive Miniatures Game” and I’m okay with that concept, too.
What do you think of these changes? Would you like to see the concept of a “Banned and Restricted” list make an appearance in other games? If so, which ones and how?
