40K Deep Thought – Marine Codex Could Be Missing Units
We now know enough about the new Space Marine codex to know that something isn’t adding up…
GW announced the new Space Marine codex to much elation this past weekend, and yesterday we got even more info. As we start to wade into this complex release. We need to pull out our calculator apps and do a little simple math – we are going to take stock of the units we know are going to be in various marine books.
Unit Mathhammer
Existing Marine Codex – 85 units
New Primaris Units – 11 units (units from Shadowspear, Vigilus, newly announced ones, like the Executioner)
Expected Current Total Units: 96 units
The New Marine Codex: 76 units (confirmed by GW)
Number of Named Characters in the Existing Marine Codex: 13
Something Doesn’t Add Up
As you can see we are coming up short 20 units in the new marine codex – and that’s quite a lot. Where oh where could they be?
In a best-case situation where we assume all 13 of the named characters have been removed from the core codex and put somewhere else – that still leaves us at (96 – 13 = 83) units compared to the 76 reported in the codex. That means 7 units have been removed. For every all-new unit or character added (perhaps the Iron Hands, or Blood Ravens characters already shown), or datasheet brought over from the BA/DA/SW books, another unit is missing from the current codex for the numbers to add up.
I’ve already talked about the increasing size of the Marine codex and how GW could address it here: Slimming Down the Codex. I have no idea what these numbers mean – as we don’t have enough information, but it looks highly likely that at least some units are getting cut.
~The big question is – which ones and why?
