Aeronautica Imperialis – Wings of Vengeance Unboxed
Games Workshop has a brand new boxed set for Aeronautica Imperialis with everything you need to get started – take a look inside!
If you’re excited to take to the not-so-friendly skies of Aeronautica Imperialis then you’re going to want to see what you’re in for. It’s a new boxed set with a bunch of cool airplanes and all the goods you need to start playing:
Take To The Skies
Inside the box you’ll find some brand new miniatures from Games Workshop. For starters, you’ll get two air squadrons that you can pit against each other. You’ll be able to build:
- 2x Imperial Navy Thunderbolt Fighters (can be assembled as Thunderbolt Fighters or Thunderbolt Fury Fighters)
- 2x Imperial Navy Marauder Bombers
- 3x Ork Air Waaagh! Dakkajets
- 2x Ork Air Waaagh! Fighta Bommers
The Imperial Navy
The Marauder Bomber is the largest of the planes in the box. In fact, we compared it in size to the Warlord Titan and yes, they are the same scale – which makes this plane MASSIVE. The wingspan is almost as long as the Titan is wide – which is pretty darn cool! The bomber also is the only kit in the box that is made from two different sprues.
The Thunderbolt is up next and it’s only slightly smaller. What’s neat is both of these sets have enough bits to build two planes per single sprue! The Thunderbolts do have some the option to build two different versions as well.
Ork Air WAAAGH!!!
The Ork Fighta Bommers also come two to a sprue. These planes are larger than the Dakkajets but smaller than the Marauder Bomber. They are a bit more detailed than the Imperial ships just because they seem to have a lot more doodads all over the plane. It’s that orky bolt-on look, but at a smaller scale – and it totally works. Kinda makes you wish GW would do Gargants in this style…but that’s another article.
The final set is the Dakkajets. These are pretty neat for lots of reason – but note that you DO get 3 to a sprue. They have a lot going on and really do look like the 40k kits, but scaled down. It’s an impressive feat.
Everything Else
It’s not just planes in the box – you get everything else you need to play Aeronautica Imperialis in the box, too. You get a fold-out mat to play on (which is double-sided). You get dice, 2 quick reference cards, tokens, and of course a 36-page book with all the rules for playing the game.
A quick note on the game play, it is hex based and uses d6’s for the dice. This game also uses variable speeds (throttle) and altitudes which are tracked on the airplane’s base:
This mechanic really does help to differentiate it from some of those other dogfighting games out there. It’s going to be interesting to see where GW takes this game from here. It seems like a solid core – it’s just going to be a matter of time to see how it gets supported and if the community builds up around this one! The miniatures are great and I really wish GW had created some rules to use them in Adeptus Titanicus…But oh well. Time to come up with some homebrew rules.
I mean, C’MON!
