Age of Sigmar: Bone Tithe Mortarch Breakdown
Have you seen the new video from The Tithe? Because it sure looks like the Death Faction is getting some new units – and they are looking awesome!
It has been an exciting weekend for Age of Sigmar players, specifically those of us who have a slant toward all things Death. The Tithe event is coming with major reveals slated for NOVA this week – but for now, we’ve GOT to talk about this video:
So JR did a quick look at this video, but today we’re going to take a deeper look at some of these units and what they could be for the Death Faction. Keep in mind this is speculation, but we’re basing this on GW track record of showing-off units in these types of teasers, units from the past, and maybe a little wish-listing on our part. That said, let’s get started.
First up – New Skeleton Calvary!!! These guys look pretty cool in the artwork, also note they are skeletal – that’s going to be important later. They have armor that looks almost Samurai inspired. What’s cool about that is that it’s remincent of the Mortghast’s armor with the segmented plates.
On top of that, look at the bone structure of that horse. I don’t think that’s a horse! Now, it totally could be…but it neck and head are much beefer with more bones. And the shoulders are a little bit broader than a horse. For an example of an undead horse, look at the current Skeletal Calvary units:
These little twiggy guys are the Black Knights. Again, you can see there is a very distinct difference. Honestly, that mount looks more like a Khorne Juggernaught that has been turned to undead than these frail looking horses. I welcome our new, larger Skeletal Calvary!
Next up, I wanted to take a closer look at an individual warrior. Notice that this figure has similar armor and looks beefy – actually, really beefy. In fact, he’s got…skin. Now, thanks to Warcry, we know that Death does have “human” followers. There are mortals that live in Shyish, the Realm of Death. And they clearly have been drafted into the army of the dead (ironically?) and have been infused with the powers of death. It’s not that Death doesn’t have it’s fleshy citizens already – there are the Zombies, Ghouls and Vampires, but these guys are something new and improved. And frankly, I’m okay with an update to these models:
Yes, these are the OLD, OLD version – but they are still for sale from GW so I’m picking on them…
Catapults are BACK!!! It’s not the first time that Skeletons have used catapults. Lots of vet will remember the dreaded Screaming Skull Catapults from Tomb Kings:
Obviously, Nagash has made some improvements…Now, they also look absolutely massive compared to the army. Will this be their big “Behemoth” kit? Quite possibly! Time will tell.
Now, let’s take a closer look at the leader – and his guards behind him. Remember how we mentioned that Samurai vibe? Well, check out the guy to his right, your left in the picture. That guy looks like a skeletal warrior from feudal Japan with a GW twist! The armor, the Headgear, the Sword – that’s rad! Now, look at the bannerman on his left, right on the picture. That’s another callback to the same armor style.
On to the big guy – Again, he’s armor looks awesome and that shield looks like a segmented plate – similar to the Morghast. As for the “leader” here, I’m getting a Skeletor-meet-Shao-Khan vibe. And it’s hard to tell because of his armor, but he certainly doesn’t look like he’s all bone either…
In fact, if you look at the close-up of his face, you can clearly see some skin there. This guy ain’t a skeleton, but he’s playing one on TV. Well, at least on the internet…Anyhow, it’s a neat look and I want to see these models so bad! The only thing I do take issue with is his helmet:
It’s a little too Khorne for me. Hopefully GW will give us some head-swap options. Anyhow, going back to the Calvary up top, maybe this was a turned follower of Khorne and maybe those are skeletal juggers! I doubt it – but hey, who knows what GW has up their sleeves!?
Well, that’s all we know for now. The Tithe is coming soon and we’re supposed to get more reveals at NOVA this week so stay tuned…
What do you think of these new Skeletons/Warriors for the Undead? Are we about to see the arrival of the Tomb-KHANS?!
