Geekery: New ‘His Dark Materials’ Trailer is Beary Impressive
HBO will be bringing Phillip Pullman’s hit YA novel series to American audiences thanks to a partnership with the BBC. The eight-part adaptation covers the entire trilogy – The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass.
The books are set on an alternate Earth where people have animal familiars, called daemons, that are psychically linked to them. The story follows Lyra Belacqua as she quests to find a kidnapped friend and discovers a sinister organization’s evil plot. On the way to unraveling the mystery she encounters extraordinary beings and learns dangerous secrets she must protect.
The production quality looks better than 2007’s The Golden Compass, New Line’s attempt at the series that didn’t pan out after the first installment of the trilogy. I also like the casting a lot. I am definitely going to watch this, especially given that it covers all of the books so there’s no worry about cliff hangers with no resolution.
The series stars Dafne Keen as Lyra Belacqua, Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter, James McAvoy as Lord Asriel, Clarke Peters as Dr. Carne and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby.
His Dark Materials debuts on HBO and BBC later this year.
