Numenera heads for even stranger unexplored territories–the mystical datasphere which is the source of magic powers–in this latest Kickstarter.

They say Knowledge is Power. And in Numenera’s 9th World, this expression may be much more literal than you think. The strange and miraculous effects that feel like magic, which Jacks and Nanos can pull off with ease, come in part from tapping into the Datasphere that surrounds the world. This artifact of a bygone civilization who built it for an unknown purpose is at the heart of the latest Kickstarter from Monte Cook Games. Seeking to launch three books that explore strange frontiers–and in the ninth world that’s saying something, Liminal Shores looks to give players more options to explore than ever before. Let’s check it out.

Over a billion years into the Earth’s future, great civilizations have risen and fallen, each attaining wonders beyond our wildest dreams and furthest imaginings. The remnants of these civilizations shaped the Ninth World into a beautiful but weird place of both wonder and danger.

But the Ninth World still has more unexplored places. One of them is all around us, even now. It’s a network of ancient information, sustained by machines far above our heads circling the world far overhead. And it’s much more than that. It is knowledge and secrets, but it’s also a sort of place. A conceptual space. The datasphere.

Up until now, people have only caught glimmers of the datasphere. But recently access points, called vertices, have been discovered. Those who find these access points can use them to explore a metaphysical space and plumb the depths of its mysteries. Further, they can use them to learn of new discoveries in the real world. Whole new lands to explore. And even to uncover the mysteries of the prior worlds, and the grand actions that took place aeons ago, affecting the Earth, the Sun, and the other planets. Actions that have an impact—perhaps a massive impact—on our world today.

Numenera is a game about exploration and discovery. The three new hardcover books offered in this Kickstarter campaign give you all-new methods of exploration and incredible discoveries to be made. They will take your campaign to new heights while embracing the game’s core focus.

The first of these books, Voices of the Datasphere expands the idea of the datasphere, looking at multiple datanetworks that may or may not be human in origins. Over the centuries, these networks have evolved and been repurposed in many different ways, not all of them intentional. With the datasphere, players can explore realms of information both metaphysical and…in some cases, actually step into other worlds made real with information.

Liminal Shores, on the other hand, takes players to a new land locked away by clues hidden throughout the datasphere. But this new land–is it inhabited? If so, who by? And what secrets do they know? You’ll find new creatures, NPCs, and adventures awaiting you in this campaign setting that introduces a whole new land to Numenera.

Finally, Edge of the Sun looks at how, one billion years in the future, the Earth’s sun is still around. What mysterious rites did the beings of the old civilizations do to try and ensure the survival of Earth–and what’s going to happen now that the sun’s luminosity seems to be increasing? As a promised epic finale, this book seems like a great way to ensure your players have the thrill of a lifetime.

And of course, if anything Monte Cook Games has done is sure to fit the bill, they will unlock more books as they hit new Stretch Goals. So be sure and hop in now while the getting’s good.
