Warhammer 40K Rumors: About that Black Templars Box
Yes, your eyes are not lying – there’s BLACK TEMPLARS talk out there on the rumorwire. Here’s the latest:
As we all know, the Black Templars have had a mercurial history in the game.
The Road of Faith is Winding
They were introduced in the Armageddon campaign book way back in 3rd edition as one of the mini-codexes included. They got a lot of cool minis, and had their own codex for a while in 4th edition. Then the other first founding chapters with no rules got pissed and mugged them in an alley. It was all downhill from there.
They got folded into the Space Marine codex and are now playing second fiddle to the other big chapters.
But there’s rumortalk folks! With the removal of all the Black Templars units from the core codex, GW was forced to come out with a quick PDF to keep them legally on the tabletop a few days back. They are widely expected to reappear formally in a future Imperial Fists Supplemental codex.
The Rumors
But all of that is mere background for today’s rumors. Sources say look for the following:
- A new boxed set is coming – featuring the Black Templars
- Orks will be the opponents.
- Look for it Q4
- Look for 2 new plastic HQs in the box.
Thoughts
While this seems crazy – it’s actually not so far fetched. We have already seem GW embrace the 1-week splash release boxed sets featuring various chapters of marines versus a xenos opponent. Remember these:
I think the rumors are talking an upcoming member of this “Two Armies Clash in the 41st Millennium” line of releases. Not a real “starter boxed set” like Dark Imperium, but the quick and dirty X vs Y boxes that throw in 2 new minis destined to be clampacks months down the road (that Ultramarines Lieutenant from Wake the Dead just came out last week). The majority of these boxes are existing minis, and they usually throw in the chapter’s upgrade sprues and decals.
A Black Templars vs Ork box would give them a change to highlight the Primaris side of the army, get new players building BT armies, and come up with 2 new plastic minis, for the included factions.
Some suggestions:
- Primaris Black Templars Emperor’s Champion (it would be AWESOME)
- Primaris Black Templars Lieutenant (you just know GW will pick this)
- Primaris Black Templars Marshal (long shot)
- I got nothing on the Ork side… unless they want to roll out some plastic Kommandoes, or Deffkoptas.
- There’s been chatter of a plastic Ghaz, but to be frank there’s ALWAYS talk of him. These boxes have never included a named character and I would assume a Ghaz release would merit something more high-end like a Vigilus Style campaign.
