Aeronautica Imperialis is here, bringing with it fleets of new planes, new tactics, and a host of ground-based defenses that look like they’d be at home on the battlemats of Aeronautica Imperialis or the fields of Adeptus Titanicus. Today, we’re taking you through the new models one by one:
Marauder, Destroyer, I’m the guy with the plane
The first thing to note about the Rynn’s World Air War Campaign Book is that it includes all the rules for playing Aeronautica Imperialis inside the covers. So if you just wanted to learn how to play and/or wanted to read about it without buying the big box – get this book. Secondly, if you’re familiar with Rynn’s World, I have some bad news – there are no Space Marine Aircraft in this book. It’s an Imperial Navy vs Ork Air WAAAGH!!! campaign book.
This book also contains a lot of expanded rules. Obviously, it’s got info for campaign play and a ton of lore about the actual Rynn’s World campaign, but it’s a lot more than that. You also get all the info for Squadron lists as well as all the info and rules for Ground Assets. You also get rules for Aces for both the Orks and Imperial forces. And to top it off, you also get six narrative scenarios that you can use to fly different missions and change up the game types. It’s 88-pages of full color Aeronautica – it’s basically your BRB for this game.
MAPS
This boxed set is essentially 2 cardboard map sections. When combined together they for a 19 hex x 18 hex map grid for playing larger games on. The maps are double sided as well.
- Side 1: Jadeberry Hill N266-E114 – the strategically vital area on the outskirts of New Rynn City. A blasted wasteland of hills and extensive maglev lines and roads.
- Side 2: New Rynn City N292-W451 – one of the beleaguered districts of the city.
They are pretty well done in terms of the photo-quality on the maps. More importantly to me, however, is the fact that these really expand your play area by quite a bit.
You can also get multiple copies of these boards and lay them side-by-side to create an even larger map. If you wanted to have a massive air battle over the tops of a city, you can do that. If you wanted to fight over the open plains, again, you can do that. The skies the limit – provided you have enough of these map sets.
For your typical game, you probably won’t need to have a bunch of these boards and a single set should work for your needs. But I’m sure there will be some super fans out there that play the equivalent of an Apocalypse-sized game on a bunch of these sets (send us pics – I want to see).
If the Wings of Vengeance box is the starter set, then Rynn’s World Air War is the campaign ‘meat’ for this game. You don’t have to get this book or the map to play – but if you want to grow your games you are going to need to ‘feed’ on something and that’s what this book and maps set represents. You may not want to start here, but if you want to keep playing Aeronautica, you’re going to end up getting Rynn’s World.
No Space Marine Air Wing in this campaign…for now.
