AoS: Hero Focus – Gotrek
Gotrek Gurnisson is a one-dwarf wrecking crew, who is so powerful even the death of his own world couldn’t stop him. Now he’s coming to your tabletop.
I’ve made it a personal rule to try not to talk about special characters in this series, as I want to highlight how awesome the generic characters can be with the right kits.
However, I would be remiss not to make an entry on Warhammer’s original one dwarf wrecking crew, the Slayer Gotrek Gurnisson, to celebrate his return to Age of Sigmar. Enemies of Order beware, because this guy is even angrier and more killy than before, and he’s headed to a table near you.
Gotrek is not cheap by any means, clocking in at 520 points, which is a fairly hefty price to pay in most games. This would normally mean he can only be taken in matched games larger than 2000 points, but he has a caveat in his rules that allows him to override the allied point limit in any size game, so long as he is the only ally taken. Normally this isn’t a problem, but even if you can afford more, you can’t take them.
That being said, Gotrek is enough on his own. You definitely get what you pay for. He’s got 8 wounds, which is insane for an on foot infantry hero, and a 4+ save, so he’s pretty durable even before any special rules. But after that, he reduces all damage for weapons or spells that wound him to 1, only suffers a single mortal wound if he would be slain outright, and whenever he suffers a wound or mortal wound, he ignores it on a 3+. Calling Gotrek durable is like saying Sigmar is a little fond of hammers, so he’ll most likely survive 99% of the fights you throw him at.
Speaking of combat, that is most definitely where Gotrek thrives, which makes sense for the most famous Slayer alive. His attack profile is gorgeous, giving him 6 attacks with his massive Fyreslayer Greataxe Zangrom-Thax. These attacks hit and wound on a 3+, have a rend of -2, and deal 3 damage each, so he’s able to dish out a ton of damage. As if that wasn’t enough power, he can also re-roll all his hit and wound rolls, and should he roll a 6 to hit, he deals d6 mortal wounds ON TOP OF HIS REGULAR DAMAGE!
He is most definitely going to delete units at a time, and in the unlikely event that anything survives his onslaught, at the end of the combat phase he can pile-in and attack again if there is an enemy within 3”. This gives him the potential to do 108 damage in a single round of combat, should everything go perfectly, and makes him one of the most devastating single models in the game. He is definitely worth a look in any Order army, but don’t expect him to play nice with others.
What do you think of Gotrek?
