Geekery: GoT Takes Home Best Drama Series Emmy – Plus Other Winners
The Primetime Emmys were held last night, recognizing achievements in television. The usual names were present, plus some pleasant surprises.
While Game of Thrones has swept the awards in past years, the final season fell short. They picked up best drama series, and Peter Dinklage snagged another best supporting actor statuette (a record breaking 4th time). He talked about working on the show in a post ceremony press conference.
“I count myself so fortunate to be a member of a community that is nothing but all about tolerance and diversity. Because no other place could I be standing on a stage like this… It’s been about 10 years, all said and done, since the moment I met [David Benioff] and [D.B. Weiss] until right now. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I knew David and Dan were quite brilliant. We did nothing but sweat, we did nothing but laugh. Dave and Dan, we literally walked through fire and ice for you, literally. And I would do it all again in a heartbeat.”
HBO also earned three awards for Chernobyl – best limited series, best directing for a limited series for Johan Renck, and best writing for a limited series for Craig Mazin.
Several that I was very happy to see in series I haven’t talked about much in my column, but watch obesseively – Tony Shalhoub and Alex Borstein picked up supporting actor/actress in a comedy series for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel; Billy Porter won best actor in a drama series for Pose; and Jodie Comer won best actress in a drama series for Killing Eve. Fleabag took home four – lead actress and best writing in a comedy series for Phoebe Waller-Bridge and best directing in comedy series for Harry Bradbeer.
Netflix’s ‘select your own story’ style movie – Bandersnatch – picked up a Outstanding Television Movie trophy (beating out Deadwood and King Lear) and a creative Emmy for its use of interactive media.
