Geekery: NBC is Bringing ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Back
According to Deadline the new series will be part of the exclusive lineup of shows on NBC’s new streaming service. The company has a history with the show – they produced Glen A. Larson’s original series in 1978 and Ronald D. Moore’s reboot that aired on Syfy. It brought an expanded the story of the war with the Cylons with their machine controlled Basestar and Cylon Raiders.
The new NBCUniversal streaming service that the company said Tuesday would be called Peacock will launch in April 2020 with original content that includes series reboots from the NBCU library among its fare. That list includes the return of a sci-fi classic: a new Battlestar Galactica, billed as an original series from Mr. Robot and Homecoming executive producer Sam Esmail.
Sam Esmail – creator of Mr. Robot and Amazon’s Homecoming – will be at the helm of the series. He has confirmed that this is not a reboot or remake of the beloved Syfy series that aired in the mid-aughts. Esmail apparently talked to Ronald D. Moore during the planning stages and got his blessing because of his love of the BFG universe.
BSG fans, this will NOT be a remake of the amazing series @RonDMoore launched because… why mess with perfection? Instead, we’ll explore a new story within the mythology while staying true to the spirit of Battlestar. So say we all!

While the project looks promising (Esmail is a brilliant storyteller and can pull in great people), it’s yet another streaming service subscription fans will have to pick up. That’s going to be the biggest barrier to new shows being successful now – is it worth having another bill to pay?
