Pimpcron: I’m Blind To New Releases
Pimpcron is tired of being asked if he’s seen new Warhammer leaks.
This is the Pimpcron, but you already knew that. I wanted to touch on a subject that comes up a lot in my conversations and it irritates me.
“Have You Seen It?”
I’ll be having a perfectly nice conversation with a friend who shares my Warhammer interests. Then they ask the dreaded question: “Did you see the new leaks on [insert faction]?”
No. I didn’t see those leaks. No, I’m not excited. I honestly don’t care. When it finally is up to purchase, I will look at it and decide if I want to buy it. The look of eager comradery over a shared interest drains from their face and they do one of two things.
Some continue to drone on and on about whatever new thing they saw even though I don’t care. Others find my disinterest to be a downer and they stop talking about the new shiny. Then I feel bad. But only for a second because I give the sad friend a lollipop. Everyone asks why I keep unwrapped lollipops in my wallet. It’s to cheer up sad friends.
What Is With You People?
Everyone just loses their minds over new releases. They follow the leaks, they enjoy speculating about new rules or stratagems, and they love talking about it. I just don’t really get it. Sure, I get excited when I want a new army or something, but if it isn’t available for purchase right now, I am not interested in thinking about it. I genuinely wonder why people get so excited about talking about this stuff. I understand that you are into this hobby, and so am I. But I struggle to figure out exactly what it is you get so excited for when new leaks drop.
Pictured: Not Me
Obviously new releases are a chance for a change in the Meta or new options for your army. Maybe if you only play one army it would be exciting to get new stuff. Maybe that’s what these constant new releases are geared towards: mono-army players.
I Used To Be Like You
My friend James and I were discussing this development recently. We work together and we used to talk about Warhammer non-stop. We were so excited to talk about it and we were super jazzed every time we heard new things coming down the pipe. Now we rarely bring up Warhammer at work and now that we have realized that, I’m kind of sad. He has been playing as long as I have. Maybe the reason why we don’t talk about it that often anymore is that the new game feeling wears away after a decade.
My News Feed With New Releases
Don’t get me wrong, I still like to play the game. I look forward to playing each week at my local club and I still buy stuff and paint models. I’m just really over the rumor mill and the sneak peeks. Am I being a Negative Nancy? I hate to harsh everyone’s buzz over this stuff but I physically could not be less interested for it.
Maybe It’s Not Me
Of course it could be that I have grown accustomed to the game and like with everything, it’s not as exciting over time. But the more I think about it, I blame GW. Now now, hear me out. I’m not saying this from a GW-hater point of view, I’m saying this from a point of view that is largely positive of GW.
The insane release schedule that they have been able to maintain in the last couple years may have played a big part in my new release burn out. I mean, they used to release new product quarterly or less frequent. Back then, if ANY army got something new it was exciting and you were happy for them even if that wasn’t an army you play. It was just cool to be getting new stuff. Now it’s like GW has loaded an uzi with new product and is peppering your news feed. My personal opinion is that they may have enlisted Santa Clause to supervise production.
Okay Help Me Out
To all of you players that have been playing more than five years, are James and I having some sort of Gamer Life Crisis? Does it get better from here? I’d love to get excited about new releases again, to talk about it with enthusiasm. Have you ran into this sort of problem and did you get out of it?
Like I said, I’m not bored with the game, just sick of all the hype and releases.
