Warhammer 40K: A Trip To Old Terra – With Minis!
Let’s follow some minis around the Old World.
For the last two weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of traveling around Germany and Switzerland seeing various castles, forts and other sites. This was a trip to see a bunch of castles, but we also hit up a few other cool sites (and Oktoberfest). Of course, I wasn’t alone. I had some good friends both humans and miniatures along for the ride and we took some pictures. While I obvious had to bring a few old fantasy models along (Germany was the inspiration of the Empire) I figured the most fitting model to take on my travels was a ubiquitous Primaris Lt., the model soon to make up 100% of GW’s line up. Here are a few of the highlights my little friends saw along the way.
At Castle Liebenstein the Bright Wizard Von Horsthiem, returning with us from last time, felt right at home back in the real version of the Empire.
Of course his old foe, the Plaguebearer Rotus Pukeguts, was there to torment him and the two battled on across the old castle.
Alas, Von Horsthiem’s attempts to awaken the sleeping defenders of the castle proved in vain.
He did however manege to open a warp rift summing the Ultramarine, Primaris Lt. Antonius, who quickly went on to study the castles defensive weapons. 
Trapped in the past on old Terra, Lt. Antonius began plotting his take over of the Rhine castles using a handy 3d map. 
Lt. Antonius’ first step was an attack on Pfalzgrafenstein Castle, though he was only able to take over a model of the castle.
Gutenfels Castle was next on his list, but with a way to cross the River, he turned south into the nearby hills.
At Trifels Castle he found another model to capture, though he was a few years late to meet the English King Richard who had some strange ties to Antonius’ birth city of Nottingham.
Still the views from the top of Trifels Castle, from which he could see both Anebos Castle and Scharfenberg Castle.
From Trifels Lt. Antonius made his way across the Rhine at last to take in the sight of a Black Forest waterfall near Tirberg.
In Gruyères, Switzerland Lt. Antonius met some of the roots of 40K at the HR Giger Museum.
He faced strange and terrible beasts across the city.
They seemed to come out of the walls.
The castle’s gardens even presented a challenge.
Even the local bar seemed… menacing.
But the Alpine views were worth it.
In the heart of Switerland we came about as close to The World-That-Was as possible, sadly we could not go see if Karl Franz was there (which might have been for the best, I doubt Lt. Antonius would take kindly to this other Emperor. 
For one last Castle Lt. Antonius got to take a much anticipated visit to Neuschwanstein Castle (You know Ludwig II likely would have been into 40K, the dude was a huge nerd and basically built the castle so he could cosplay old German legends.) 
With our European adventure at an end we at last headed to the airport, but on the way we were greeted with the surprise sight of some real German Knights going at it in a random field. I guess the Old World lives after all!
